So today I got a really good deal on a wheel/tire package off a 2021 Gladiator. Owner said they had less than 50 miles when pulled. 285/70R17 which should be slightly smaller diameter than the 33x10.5xR15s that I currently have installed but they actually measure slightly larger. Going to run...
Looking great! Given competition is so soon, what's your plan to put some miles on it prior and get a feel for the car? I assume Sand Hollow, first trail? I guess it'd be exciting to drive it for the first time in competition haha.
I really appreciate the offer, thank you. If I decide to go that route I'll be sure and let you know.
I'm going to send you a PM w/ my number if you don't mind sharing pictures. Thanks.
Thanks for the input, I agree, 17's make the most sense at this point.
@xj_nate I get where your coming from on the LCA to axle, I started doing it that way and then figured it'd just be another spot where dirt/mud gets packed in so recognizing that it wasn't as good I left a gap to clean it...
Well it's off jack stands and under it's own weight, I threw the axle under to figure out drag link lengths. Cool seeing it at ride height, I'm pretty happy with where it's sitting, but there are a few issues/decisions to make (opinions always welcome).
The biggest issue I have is...
Factory vs GM 1T TRE. Links are 1.5"x0.25".
Reamed WJ knuckles to correct taper/depth
Going over knuckle put the tie rod directly in line with the spring perches so I had to grind a bit for clearance.
I've been eying a SWAG finger brake for a while and finally pulled the trigger.
I also picked up some gooseneck dies.
The MJ has been a great project to learn on and the first thing I want to try and make is an offset axle side track bar mount, I stole these pictures from @Greg's TJ build...
Thanks, hopefully in the future I don't regret it. It's tough to not keep growing the scope, but I keep going back to my original build plan of a daily driver/33s/mild wheeling rig and I think this axle will fit the bill. I have my buggy to do buggy stuff, this just needs to be a fun...
The stock stabilizer and swaybar mounts are very much in the way of the WJ knuckles; I figured I'd end up cutting them off anyway because I didn't expect drank link angles would be acceptable so I cut it all off and boxed in the passer side which has less meat than the driver without the...
Gears/truetrac engaged.
My take at a build appropriate HP D30 and starting reassembly. Waiting to finish panhard mount thoughts until I paint it all.
WJ knuckles about ready for paint (cleaning junkyard parts is obnoxious).
We dig the long hair grumpy old man look, but he was getting hot, couldn't see well, and starting to get matted even though we brushed him regularly so we shaved him down from 6" to about 1". 9mo old, 71lb.
I had a similar yet simpler and not as strong of an idea as you described and decided not to do it, then you posted this and I changed my mind. Maybe a waste of time compared to what you described... but I do think it'll add simple structure to keep the upper part of the C from becoming more...
I've finished my bracing (other than boxing in control arm mounts). Lots of grinding/massaging to get a good fit, made a wreck of the shop. Anytime I welded to cast I used the preheat-weld-postheat-wrap w/ blankets and let cool slowly approach w/ standard mig wire, seems to have worked out...
I went to Ogden Pic-a-part on 17th. There were quite a few WJs there, but I narrowed my search to '02-'04 as I was hoping to find the Akebono calipers (I did but they were shot). I think the '99-'04 knuckles are all the same though, if that's true I'm sure you could find a set there. I just...
A couple weeks ago and did a quick run through the junkyard, grabbed a booster/master cylinder out of a 2000 WJ. As well as a proportioning valve spring out of a 97 ZJ.
Snagged some knuckles off of a 2002 WJ, the calipers/rotors were shot so I'll be getting new.
Got my axle back from bead...
