14 bolt year differences?

I have a 14 bolt that is missing hubs. I am looking at picking up another axle to rob the hubs, but I don't know what year of the axle I have. The axle I'm looking at is supposed to be from a 1969.
How do I tell what year 14 bolt that I am looking at? Does it matter what year?

Year wise I don't think it matters much. You should be more interested in getting thr hub you want, single wheel, dually, or C&C. Each will give you a different wms to wms distance. Check out the 14 bolt bible on Pirate.

If it is a 10.5 FF with the brakes pressed on the hubs (pre 80 sometime) it shouldn't matter.

My 14 bolt was a 77 from a pickup. I know because I pulled it. I put the dually hubs on it to get a little narrower when it went under the jeep. (I have the hubs off of my axle and could probably come up with the huge drum brake assembly if you are going to be near SL anytime soon)

I think I might be trading some stuff for some SRW hubs locally. I will check with you when I am headed down next. The axle I was looking at was supposed to be from a 1969 pickup, but the 14 Bolt Bible said it wasn't available that early. The dude selling the axle just kept telling me it was a 14 bolt. Once he sent me pictures, it was clearly not what I was looking for.

Was it a round diff cover and drop out 3rd member? Probably an Eaton if it was that old. I don't know a lot about them other than they were the grandfather of the 14 bolt. Some similarities and might even share some of the same internals but don't look anything alike. I'd stay away only because I don't know enough about them. I have run trails with guys that had them and knew about them. Just my 2 cents.

Ya. It sounds like it was an Eaton then. I just figured that as cheap as 14 bolts are, I would just pass on that thing.

It might be worth it, a lot of people like the Eaton since it doesn't hang down quite as much and is round on the bottom.

For future searchers, there is a split: 73-88, and 88up. The main difference is the size of one of the pinion bearings, and 88-up axles have ribbed housings. They also have slightly different widths available, as well as a super-wide dually axle.

As far as the diff internals go, what are the differences between 73-88, 88-99, and 99+?
The reason that I ask, is that I have a bearing kit for the 73-88 version, but I am building a 99+ axle now. I have been told that only the pinion bearing/race/seal are different. Any confirmation on this?

I've been doing a lot of research on these. The pinion bearings and seals are the only difference

The inner pinion bearing is smaller on the 88 and older 14 bolts also the crush sleeve is slightly different.

Pinion seal and inner hub seals will interchange with the older versions.

84 and 85 years are a no go.

They have a obsolete third pinion bearing that is not replaceable.

You have to machine the most inner pinion bearing pocket out to the bigger normal size.

Like they used a needle bearing from spindle.
