So? What did you decide?

Also, why is the turbo surge bad? (what does it do to the turbo?) Mine does it regularly....

It's the pressure difference between the intake and the exhaust is my understanding. Mine does it too, when towing and uphill below 2000 rpms. The ats ported housing is the cheapest fix.

What I mean is, what does it damage in the turbo to have it surge? If it doesn't actually hurt anything then I'm OK with the weird noise, but I don't want to be forced to replace something that I could have avoided...

I've read that before....it still doesn't explain what will be damaged by the surging.

I've been reading about the ATS ported housing though, and it does sound like a neat option. I've also seen references to large thrust loads on the turbo caused by the pressure fluctuations of the surge--so I'd assume I'd be looking at bearing failure due to that?

I would assume its sort of like a backfire on the compressor wheel where it sees a different type of load from the exhaust side where it usually sees it from the intake. So it places a load on the bearing back and forth when it surges.

Exactly. That's what happened to mine. chirp, chirp, chirp = impact load, impact load, impact load.

Poor-ted housing, very nice! Love the difference! Now, instead of surging, it just builds boost and goes!

Except the louder whistle sound...some folks like it, but it gets a little old hour after hour.

Ok, first real tow with the new turbo housing: pulling the jeep over point of the mountain, southbound. Not the biggest hill in the world, but usually a decent warm up. Where it used to chirp at about 70mph, 2000rpm and 15psi, now it just builds boost and moves out. Money well spent.

Cool, I'll check it out. I've also been really happy with thedieselstop.com.

I've got the big honkin' air filter from napa 6637, now have a ported housing (highly recommended), DP Tuner 5 position chip (stock, high idle, 60hp high altitude 9k-13k tow, 80hp high altitude 5k-9k tow, 80hp "econ", which is also as aggressive as the stock motor can make use of without upgraded injectors, pump, etc). Finally, a Walker "big truck muffler". I opted out of a 4" exhaust because they cause a drone in the eXcursion.

So what exactly did you have them do to the turbo and how much was the grand total?

I just lost the turbo in the 03 7.3 that I bought last wednesday =(

It just quit boosting. No noise or nothing. Truck is a dog without it to. Can barely hold 60.

My housing is super discolored. I wish I would have noticed it before I bought it but I think my turbo has been very hot on more than one occasion.

The dealer I bought it from is going to help me out some but I dont know how much yet.

I will have to check out that BD turbo
