So? What did you decide?
Also, why is the turbo surge bad? (what does it do to the turbo?) Mine does it regularly....
It's the pressure difference between the intake and the exhaust is my understanding. Mine does it too, when towing and uphill below 2000 rpms. The ats ported housing is the cheapest fix.
Read up, son. What I mean is, what does it damage in the turbo to have it surge? If it doesn't actually hurt anything then I'm OK with the weird noise, but I don't want to be forced to replace something that I could have avoided...
I've read that before....it still doesn't explain what will be damaged by the surging.
I've been reading about the ATS ported housing though, and it does sound like a neat option. I've also seen references to large thrust loads on the turbo caused by the pressure fluctuations of the surge--so I'd assume I'd be looking at bearing failure due to that?
Surge causes vibrations that will eventually cause the compressor wheel to come apart, or the shaft to brake.
That doesn't sound like a happy time.

Were you able to build more boost than before, or just smoother?
Hey Brett you can always find diesel related parts and info at dieselbombers.com they have section just for the 7.3 and yet another section for just the Exercusion...
I would really like to know more about what you did and how much if you could pm me that info it would be great...
John
I just lost the turbo in the 03 7.3 that I bought last wednesday =(
So what exactly did you have them do to the turbo and how much was the grand total?
