My co-worker Mike has a friend with a '73 FSJ that he may transfer to Mike as part of some swap deal. Mike asked me if he should be interested. Sure, I said. He asked me about its possible driveline; all he knows is his buddy says it's a V8 automatic. Mike instantly assumed it would be a 360, though I said it might be a 304. Mike thought it might have a Turbo400, though I said a Turbo350 is more likely, and a 727 (or actually a 904) is probably more likely than that. Even still, I'm just guessing here.

Realistically--assuming they haven't been swapped over the years--what engine and trans might actually be in this thing?

It could easily have a TH400...IIRC that's the trans that was used for the Quadratrac option. (full time 4WD) I don't know my years of FSJ's well enough to know when that was an option vs a 727/D20.

There's a slight possibility it could have a 401, but they are rare. Yes on the TH400, like Carl said, but they are a different animal and the cases are unique to the quadratrac t-case.

Totally Awesome
The 401 or 360 is a good motor. Just make sure you have a good fuel pump and you'll be golden. I ran a cam'd 360 in my Waggy, with a big exhaust. It was surprising fast.

Man, I really miss that old beast.

Mine was a 1978, 401, TH400, Quadratrack.

Sold the 401 for $1000. Bought and Rebuilt a 360 for $600. Paid $500 for the truck. LOL

I also installed a 40 gallon Suburban tank at the rear. It had a lot more fuel range with that.
