I just watched some of the news feed that MSNbc has out, and all I can say is wow! I am hoping for the best in this situation!! :(

I am also worried about all the tsumani watches/warnings that are coming into effect now, say they can hit as far as Mexico, I hope not tho, my dad is down there at Baja right now

There saying Hawaii may get it the hardst.

Looks like the buildings held together pretty well. They are engineered for earthquakes. But how do you prevent tsunamis? That's just crazy. I hope you all hear from your friends and relatives and everything is ok.

The only thing you can really do is build a surge barrier like they are doing for New Orleans. However, that will only be effective for a limited size of surge.

I hope you all hear from your friends and relatives and everything is ok.

I just found out from my brother that his in-laws happened to be in Guam at the time, he hasn't heard if they are ok yet, but based on what I'm seeing on the news, Guam wasn't hit nearly as hard.

I also heard on CNN that so far no Americans have been reported dead or even injured.

conveniently we are mapping earthquakes and talking about plate tectonics right now in class.

we mapped the last three days of world wide quakes and, what do you know, japan was having activity. My kids were so excited to come to class today and talk about it and it fit right in. sorry japan

Does anyone else find natural disasters in modern, developed countries so much more fascinating than ones in the third world? Perhaps its because I can relate more. This, the earthquake in Christchurch, the flooding in Brisbane. I've been glued to these ones. Earthquake in Pakistan, while tragic, not nearly as interesting.

I find it interesting to see what our structures can withstand. this same earthquake in a 3rd world would level everything(haiti). In developed places we have the money to make strict codes and we can handle more intense natural disasters.

That's going to bugger up lining up for the runways. That is, if there are runways left.
A good friend recently came back from Japan, he was struck mute at the destruction of things he had only just visited.

And that is only the half of it. Has anyone thought about the affects on communication antenna's? That much movement would require a tech to run up the tower and realign most all of the equipment.

While listening to a news broadast today they mentioned that the main island of Japan moved 8 feet to the east. You simply cannot prepare adequately for that type of a disaster and its side effects.

A family friend was in Japan, in an airbus, on the tarmack ready to take off when the quake hit. She said that they sat in the ready position for 5.5hrs, and were finally given permission to take off; one of fee airplanes allowed to leave. She was there picking up her adopted baby daughter. She said the view as the plane lifted off was something else. She saw lots of destruction and fires.
