Went up AF Canyon last night. We drove all the way up way past the rock garden into Mineral Basin on 4 wheelers. Only a little bit of snow still on the trail in a couple shaded areas. By the way, they are charging $6 now to get up the canyon instead of $3.

All the entrance fees have gone up, but the passes are now also good for the Mirror Lake Highway area.

The annual pass is now $45 instead of $25.

At $45 you would have to go 8 times to pay it off, and 9 to be ahead. Mind you the $6.oo pass will give you three days in a row, so, the 8 times would have to be with no consecutive days.
I just do not see myself going up there ten times. There is honestly no way I can afford that much gas to wheel like that this summer. sadly...

I will have to go at least once or twice... :)

Thanks for the info...

trail damage

Fully agreed, by far the most damage to the trail, fences, etc happens up there the first few weeks the trails are open... I'm all for keeping it closed until it is all dry.

you were right. I enjoy going up & playin in the snow a bit. but I was pretty pissed to see the damage to the trail area (mineral basin) already.
the fence was completely broken down on bolth sides of the meadow & the sign broken off & tossed. I put the sign back in & tried to pound in a few of the broken posts, but Im sure some jackass will come plow them down again.

There is no excuse for that kind of damage. Do these mindless 4 wheeling amoebas know they are killing our sport? That just sucks. Thanks for the report Goose.

they need to set up a real reward system for turning these people in! if they are dumb enough to go ruin the forest for everyone they would probably turn their best friend in for two thousand dollars? get them to do some community service for this crap

"They" would be the US Forest Service. Sadly they are under major budget and resource constraints. Its easier for them to close an area than manage it for OHV users. With enough resources any trail in the canyon could be open to motorized use, without said resources they could eventually be closed. What we need is a club/association to sponsor a trail in the canyon, just as U4x4C has done with the Forest Lake Trail. They survey its needs in the spring season (broken fence, missing signs, etc) and plan and execute projects throughout the year to maintain the trail. Through a working agreement with the USFS, they don't even need an "OK" to fix an issue on their adopted trail, saves alot of time and effort jumping through the federal red tape.

You know if we can come up with a few grand for toilets at psh why can't we post up a few grand to offer as a reward for anyone that turns their friends in... it could be like the cops have where they person that got turned in has to be found guilty by the courts before they get the money... this would encourage people to take pictures of the offenders.... I would be willing to offer up some money right now!

If somebody needs a monetary value attached to it to do the right thing then something is wrong. Taking care of the environment should be priority number 1.

I would call all day and every minute for free without a problem.Even if it was a 1-900 number and I had to pay an outrageous amount I would still call.

I would rather see money like that spent on a few extra rangers then handed out to some smack head that thinks he needs to get paid to turn in somebody .If the Forest Service doesn't have enough money to properly manage an area now where do you think this magic money is going to come from.

My kids and I were in Mineral Basin yesterday I was by the big reclaimed mine site (Don't remember the name of the site....Kurt will know) on the Mineral basin road and witnessed two guys riding up and down the middle of the creek on a 4 wheeler while their girlfriends watched and videoed the event. Now I have no problem confronting/educating people when they put our abilities to enjoy the area at risk however I will not approach anybody when i have my kids with me I see it as a better to be safe than sorry situation. I kept my eyes open for a ranger but there wasn't one to be found.
Is there a way by radio or cell phone to contact a ranger in the area? In my opinion it would be awesome if a person or group had the ability to get on a CB or a hand held and call in an incident while it was happening.

No, you have to take a photo of the offense and the offender. The offender must be clearly identifiable in the photo or nothing can be done. The only LEO on that district was fired last fall, and I don't know if they have been replaced. Turn in the photos and a written statement of what you saw to the Pleasant Grove Ranger District office. One time out of ten, something will be done about it. They just don't have the resources to get it done. The most effective tool to prevent this type of abuse is to have organized trail patrol groups active in the area on a regular basis. U4WDA supposedly has a trail patrol coordinator, but they have yet to organize a single trail patrol event. Maybe someone from this thread could step-in and help out in this area.
