My trusty old compressor.... which turns out is neither trusty or old... died on me yesterday.

So now Im in the market for a new compressor. Im looking for 60gal+ and 230v single phase power. I do very little paint/body work. It generally runs some air tools(20% of the time) and my plasma cutter(80% of the time). I was checking out the Ingersoll Rand SS3L3. It seems like a good compressor for the money.(~$600)

Does anyone else have any suggestions for a reasonably priced compressor, read: less than $1000, that would fit my needs? (or a nice used one for sale) :greg:

what happened to your current compressor? They are not hard to rebuild.

connecting rod on the piston broke..... shot the top half of the motor off. All I can say is that thankfully I had not drywalled the ceiling yet.

Tank is still good, electric motor is still good. It was too small for my needs anyway. I might reuse the tank as a secondary air tank for the new compressor.:greg:

What size was the old one? (motor mostly) You can get replacement compressor pumps...

I know its repairable, and I still might fix it to sell it. It was too small for my needs anyway and Im looking to upgrade.

Wow... Cool!

Im sure you would be happy with the Ingersoll Rand.

If you don't mind the drive, or are in the area there can be some good deals on ksl.com.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
That's great! The exact same thing happened to mine a month or so ago. I'm just glad I was standing close by and not in the house or something so I could unplug it real fast.

I ended up finding a great Craftsman Pro 25-30 gal with a huge two stage pump/motor. Got it on KSL for $220. It's over $450 new. It is so much better then what I had. I can stand by it while it is running and still talk to others. It runs my air over hydro tube bender just fine. I can't imagine you need 60 gallons for what you say you use it for.

If have a large tank it will take longer to fill but gives more time between running.
You need to size the compressor pump for more volume of air than you use so it can refill the tank and shut off.
Too small on the pump and it won't keep up and thats when you have to stop working to let the compressor catch up.
If the pump is just big enough for the volume it runs all through the time you're working so over sizing lets it fill the tank and shut off, usually about 1.5 times the volume you use is good.

The 30 gal I have/had would run too much while I was working. I would like a compressor I dont have to hear all the time. Plus I have a Snapon sandblast cabinet I use time to time and the little compressors dont keep up at all. Im looking towards the future... and plan on a larger plasma cutter and a Torchmate in the next 1-2 years as long as business keeps picking up.

If this is the case, I would get a compressor that is capable of more cfm. Big or little tank, you need the cfm to keep up with a plasma cutter.
