All TH400's the same?

Getting ready to piece together drivetrain components. I'm planning on running a th400 auto trans. Are they all the same? Are 2wd and 4wd different? Spline counts? I'm a transmission amateur thanks:confused:

I'm not for certain but I am pretty sure the only real difference is if you have a Jeep 400 or a Chevy 400, and just the bellhousing patterns are different. There are different spline outputs but I think (again, I may be wrong) the most comon is 32 spline.

For what it's worth, my TH350 conversion was out of a 2WD. The 2WD trans requires you to replace the output shaft with a 4X4 unit. I believe the TH400 is this way as well.

Changing the output requires complete disassembly of the transmission, so you may as well rebuild it. Don't sweat it, they're actually quite cheap and easy to rebuild. If needed, I think I have a rebuild manual on this trans.

this is how my T350 was as well, and I swapped the shaft myself as well. It is quite simple, especially if you have a manual. I bought the haynes manual which includes all the Turbo Hydro trannys and it's actually quite good, pictures of each step and everything.

There are like 47 different output shaft lengths, but I think aside from that and the different bellhousing patterns, they're the same.

FWIW, mine was a 4x4 model of some sort already, and had plenty of spline length on the output shaft to just cut it to the short length and use the thinnest adapter possible. (something like 1" thick)

jeep t400 internals are the same as the chev 400, but the housing and tailshaft is different. My father-in-law took a bad chev 400 and put the jeep 400 internals and tailshaft in it so he could swap in his chev 350 and still run the dana 20.

Thats the same thing as what I said, just the bellhousings are different.

far enough away
... and the parts for it are WAAAAAAAY expensive.

Joey? at J&G talked me out of TH475 parts for the rebuild I didnt' end up needing.

Also, it's not ALWAYS found in box and delivery trucks. I tore up my two, neither of them had it. The parking brake on the one didn't even gaurantee it. :(

anyway.

DON"T FORGET THE B.O.P bellhousing LOL
