this is how my T350 was as well, and I swapped the shaft myself as well. It is quite simple, especially if you have a manual. I bought the haynes manual which includes all the Turbo Hydro trannys and it's actually quite good, pictures of each step and everything. For what it's worth, my TH350 conversion was out of a 2WD. The 2WD trans requires you to replace the output shaft with a 4X4 unit. I believe the TH400 is this way as well.
Changing the output requires complete disassembly of the transmission, so you may as well rebuild it. Don't sweat it, they're actually quite cheap and easy to rebuild. If needed, I think I have a rebuild manual on this trans.
There is a HD version found in motorhomes. Strait cut gears, Noisier with a slight increase in strenth.
I'm not for certain but I am pretty sure the only real difference is if you have a Jeep 400 or a Chevy 400, and just the bellhousing patterns are different. There are different spline outputs but I think (again, I may be wrong) the most comon is 32 spline.
Thats the same thing as what I said, just the bellhousings are different.jeep t400 internals are the same as the chev 400, but the housing and tailshaft is different. My father-in-law took a bad chev 400 and put the jeep 400 internals and tailshaft in it so he could swap in his chev 350 and still run the dana 20.
