Stratton cane over to share is wealth of motorcycle knowledge. He helped a ton with clarifying the confusion that is Italian translated diagrams. We started from the beginning and verified everything that I had already tested. We didn’t manage to fix it, but it was nice to be validated in my confusion.

Our conclusion is that there must be a short along the power supply to the CDI. We figure that because the only pin on the CDI that receives power from the regulator, also has continuity with the ground wire...

Tomorrow I’ll carefully pull the whole harness out, check for loose connectors, then cut away sheathing and check for damaged wire.

Orrrr, how much is a new harness?

I found where the power is grounding, it’s a capacitor!

After a little YouTube research I learned how to test the capacitor with a multimeter. The tests all show it still functions, but that doesn’t explain why it’s grounding the power input. I’ll try picking up another at ra elco tomorrow.

Aaaaaand thennnnnnnnn?
Funny you should ask. I was just thinking that I should update the thread.

So after a couple weeks of frustration, many second opinions and a garbage can full of empty beer cans, I decided to take it into s shop. Since I figured the CDI was fried I took it to Steadmans, the only Beta dealer around with certified technicians. I immediately felt like it was a poor decisions.

After 2 weeks I called them to find out what the verdict was. Here is our conversation:

Me- “Hi I’m Derek, calling about the Xtrainer with no spark”
Him- “Uh... Ok”....
...Long pause...
Me- “Did you hear me?”
Him- “Yeah, uh... what did you need?”
Me-“I’m calling about the Xtrainer I left there 2 Weeks ago”
Him-“We haven’t got the harness yet”
Me-“Ok so it was a faulty harness? Nobody called me to tell me the diagnosis”
Him-“yeah”
Me-“So how much is that? What was wrong with it? Did it get pinched? Couldn’t it just be repaired?”
Him-“Well nothing was wrong with any of the components when we tested, so we started swapping parts. That still didn’t work, so Factory Beta techs told us to warranty the harness”
Me-“Oh that’s good to hear they are working with us. So you were able to test the CDI? How about the Capacitor on the oil injection system, was that bad?”
Him-“um I’m not sure if we test that.... your harness should be in after Christmas”
Me-“Let me know when it’s done”

So today I check back in with them.

Me-“Hi it’s Derek, calling back about the Xtrainer with no spark”
Him-“Ok.........Uh.......”
Me-“Just checking to see if the bike is done”
Him-“Was that the bike with the harness?”
Me-“Last I heard Beta would warranty the harness, yes”
Him-“Well that didn’t fix it”
Me-“so now what?”
Him-“We don’t know, we can talk to tech support after the new year”
Me-“Well did you test the CDI or not? Did you check continuity through the system? What about that capacitor that went to ground?”
Him-“I’ll have to look at that”
Me-“I’m running out of time to get this fixed. Let me know if you get any answers”

So at this point I’m kicking myself for taking it there. The guy has been very nice, but never seems to be competent. The only positive thing has been repair to my pride since I couldn’t figure it out either.

Wow, that sucks! Not a fan of anyone just throwing parts at a vehicle without knowing what's causing the problem. I hope for your sake that they accidentally fix it.

Steadmans kinda sucks to be honest. They somehow have manipulated so many people into thinking they are this family owned business that takes care of everyone they seem to get away with sub par service all the time. They make people drop stuff off for weeks and months and just leave there machines out uncovered in the weather. They must have a silver tongue though my mother in law is part of the steadmans cult I watch them take her to the cleaners all the time but she wont consider another shop for any service work.

That blows. It has to be some stupid little issue.... maybe the timing chain got put on the wrong tooth?? ;)
I'm not sure if that's a dig on me or 4 strokes or 6.0's but it's funny either way.

That sucks Derek. It is SOOOOO hard to find anyone you can trust to fix difficult issues anymore. I am starting to take pride in that fact. If I can't fix it, it will be really hard to fix. You should too. Plus taking pride is better than curling up in the fetal position.

Yeah I’m a bit nervous that’s what they are doing. I would assume that Betas tech line would have bypassed that crap though??

Well that doesn’t make me feel any better about things! It doesn’t surprise me though, I had a bad feeling from the first moment I walked in. Honestly the ONLY reason I went there was for Beta certified techs and to test the CDI.

Well thanks for the compliment. I feel the same way about trusting mechanics.

I feel like the fetal position is atleast easier to do than fix my bike right now

Congrats Derek! So what was the issue? Did Steadmans fix it?

Thanks! I’m freaking stoked!! 7 months and 2 days later, I’m finally riding again!!!
Sweet. What was the fix and who found it?

So the problem boils down to a horrible design flaw by Betas electrical engineer. One place on the harness has two connections side by side. The connectors are simple 2 pin style, 2 white, 2 blue.

I connected white to white, and blue to blue. Apparently that is wrong! To make things worse the wire diagram is useless because none of the colors correspond at these connections anyway. It’s totally lame that they cross cross colors and they should have used different connector styles. DFB66360-81C8-46A2-894C-58ED608AF32F.jpeg

Steadmans couldn’t figure it out, and turned to Beta tech support for help. It took someone from factory Beta to video conference with them and they went through the bike in detail together. He spotted the issue, reversed the wires, and the rest is history
