Awesome mpg in my 4 cylinder TJ with 35's

You're all WEAK SAUCE!
After another trip to Moab, I am amazed at my gas mileage. I got 23 from Pleasant Grove to Wellington and averaged about 20 including the severe beating I gave it at area BFE.

My 4.0 TJ got horrible mileage and I'm wondering if my results are typical or if I stumbled onto the perfect setup. I love this jeep.

My trip computer said 13 coming home from St. George. I'm sure it was worse then that. I just don't want to know for sure.

back when my yj was still street legal i went through salina canyon, I-70, and i use to average bout 18-20 with 4.56 gears and 32 cooper stt. and when i switched to dana 44 axles and 35" xterrains i got around 15-17 mpg.

After each day of wheelin' last week in Moab, I would fill up my scramber (454) and my son's YJ (2.5), each time his would take about 2/3 of what mine took. Not bad, but since it runs like crap, my guess is that when we replace a bunch of the gaskets and vacuum lines and stuff this spring then it will do even better.

But when we put in a 5.3 it will...be the same???

I'd bet his mileage will increase with a 5.3.

Mine did. With the 4.0 , 4.56s and 35s I consistently got about 16 mpg. Now with a 5.3, 60's, 37's and 4.56's I consistently hit the 20 mpg and above mark. And I'm running a 5 speed rather than a gm trans with a deep overdrive.
