Does anyone know of a shop in the SL valley that can cut splines on an axle? With a quick turn around? I have Summit Machine and Advance 4wd in mind. Thoughts? Thanks.

those are the only 2 that i know of too. i've had good luck with advance, but many people have not. i really think it is a hit-or-miss thing. but from what i've heard those who had a bad experience with advance....had a really bad experience

Just because you have not heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I could pm you and let you know why I will continue to use Randy if need be, and why I will never use Mike again. I'm not sure why people have good and bad times at the same shop, but it happens all the time.
At any rate, I heard a while back that Mikes machine for cutting was down and there was no interest in fixing that machine. I also heard that Randy used Mike to cut splines when he needed it.
I do know for a fact that a guy named Jack cut splines. His shop is located at the top of the hill on 300w, a bit north of 4500s, on the east side of the road. I can't think of his shop name right off, but I can get it if the OP wants it.

I called Randy this morning, he said he doesn't do it and the only place that does is Summit. Since I don't feel like waiting a month, I will figure something else out. Thanks for the replies.
If you find anyone let me know, I have a long d-60 shaft that I wanted to get cut down. I called Summit and the person on the phone said that it couldn't be done. (not that they couldn't do it or that it isn't worth the money, that "it could not be done")
From what I have found it isn't that much cheaper to have an OEM shaft cut down than a custom chromo one made. You didn't say if your axle was OEM or chromo so that might matter.

Did some digging around, since mine is just an OEM shaft, I decided it is not worth the money. Especially considering it is out of an 80's GM 60.
I did talk to the boss today, and basically to have the shaft splined by dutchman is somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 he thought. By the time you pay freight there and back though, you might be better off just buying a new custom shaft from them.

I'm no axleshaft expert but I'd assume you can't physically cut down an OEM shaft because they are smaller diameter everywhere in comparison to the splined area and seal surface. I believe as known as a neck down shaft. But I could be wrong, may e they cut the other end I dunno.

Jack does a lot of heavy equipment repair for my company. He has never cut axle splines for us, or for me personally. He has just told me in the past that he can do it. I don't know his prices or how good of work he does on them. I know we have been pleased with the work he does for us. If you call him, tell him that Rick and Josh from Robinson Construction told you to call him. Rick is my boss and Jack knows him better then me.
My advise for anyone that wants splines cut in a shaft is to do your homework first. You can't just go to a shop and say cut this short and put 30 splines in it. Ford, Gm, and Dana all use different spline shapes for their shafts. So you should know what you have and what specific shape you should be getting. Then make sure that the shop knows this as well. Otherwise you may end up with the right spline count that wont fit into your side gears.

86-ish to 96-ish ford d60 inner shafts do not neck down and can be cut and splined
this is a super duty but I know the 86-ish to 96ish fords are similar

Cost to actually cut and re-spline them vs new chromo shaft is really the issue. to spend $150-ish to cut and re-spline or new chromo for a little over $200... And it will take the same amount of time to actually get the axle in your hands...
