axle tube leakage!

I don't have any experience working on axles... Such as changing U-joints, axleshafts, etc. I've only done my brakes! :D

The other day I was checking diff fluid levels and I noticed that I'm leaking something out of the driverside axletube on my Dana 30. It is somewhat on the knuckle and you can see where it has splattered all over such as on my shock etc....

What is this problem? Is it the gaskets on the inside of the tube? Are there 2 or just 1? How hard is it to fix... Is it expensive if I do it myself?

And finally... How would I fix it.. Would it involve pulling the shafts?

thanks! :)

If this is the case you may want to have someone else do it. It requires removing the carrier to get to the inner seal.

YJ Front axle seals are a nightmare. They are one piece, cost in the neighborhood of $300 and are a PITA to replace. You might as well find another Dana 30 or swap in a 44 now, if that's a future plan.

My old YJ was doing the same thing. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....

Well isn't that great.... I am looking at some 44's, but I am also a very poor little child.

I have a 44 that I am planning on putting on the rear with 4.10 gears and an ARB, I am just waiting for my gears to be installed in the front. Would a YJ 2.5L Dana 30 be the best choice?

Thanks again.

another question for ya, is it leaking much? I mean a LOT. Gear oil makes a leak look worse than it really is. Unless the seal is almost non-existant and fluid is gushing out, you may want to just keep it toped off untill you get your other axle ready.

No not really, I noticed it a while ago, but I thought it was just grease from the shop when I had them lube up my whole undercarriage.

Now it has gotten bigger (is gotten a word???) and spread around more so that is why I am concerned.... When I checked the diff oil in the front I was full so it must not be a bad leak.

My Dana 35 on the other hand... I need to fill it up every week!!! :D

Just a guess, but that may have been 300... installed. You have to completely dissassemble the axle to get to them. Tube seals can be a pain.

$3.99 each at 4WD hardware part 36362(The same part# as the CJs, remember it is just a dana 30). I would try to do it myself you will learn how to pull you axle shafts so you will know what to do if you ever break one.

Ide say keep topping it off untill you can afford that 44........ dana 30s are a dime a dozen so if somthing does happen before you can swap in a 44 it wouldent be hard to locate one and install it....

That's the one I'm talking about.... My bad if he's talking about the inner axle seal. Who know?

Tweaky,
I've got a 45 minute solution to your problem and it's under $40 (I think).

Look in a 4wdsu magazine. I think I saw it in a "drivetrain direct" ad. There is a billet aluminum, greasable seal that press fits in end of the axle tube. It's got a zerk on it to stay lubed. All you gotta do is pull the shaft, put it in and replace the shaft. I'm not 100%, but I am 90% sure it was for Dana 30 axles. That way you don't have to pull the carrier to replace it. Everytime you do an oil change give it a squirt of grease.
