I want to attach one piece of brass to another. What is the procedure? I have oxy/acetylene.....I think I need flux and brass rod, right?

Ok, that is some good background info. Clutch had an experience with brazing once....took a steering arm to a shop to have it welded and they brazed the arm to the knuckle for him....it broke in Moab on Rusty nail. Luckily he had a spare part and it wasn't a big deal. Good thing it didn't let loose on the freeway.

Back to brazing......I guess welding shops have brass rod and flux. Are there different types/grades? How do I know what to get?

Great guess!! Nope, I'm making a laminate flow on board high pressure water cannon!! Yeah, 400 psi and 200 feet range!!!! I need to braze some fittings and a manifold.

when we braze when we plumb (mostly copper and some brass) the copper has to glow red. the brass will not have this feature to no when it is ready. the oxy asediline torch will work great. you need a stick of silver soldier or brass rod. (never used the brass rod before) to do the brass you might need what they call denver flux. its a liquied flux not a paste. if you need any of this or some help let me no ive got it all at my shop.

Good advice, thanks. Soldering won't be strong enough, so the brass rod it is. Now I just need to find some. (And Flux).

You can buy brazing rod, it's the brass rod with a flux outer shell stuff. Looks like welding rod for stick-welders. I used it to re-attach an ARB's air line to the O-ring housing when it broke off. Didn't end up really pretty, since I didn't know what I was doing....but it did work, was airtight, and strong.

If you use brass rod to attach brass together you will be welding not brazing. Be careful if you are working with small parts because the part will start to melt before the filler rod will flow. The JW Harris website has lots of good information.

I really like Stay-Silv 15. They list the tensile strength as 40,000 to 70,000 PSI. You can buy it at Airgas in SLC. I think you can buy it in a kit with a small bottle of flux. I have only used Acetylene for silver soldering. I don't think propane of mapp gas would work.
