I am looking for alternate options to Comcast and Quest. DSL is not available at my house right now (dont know when, if ever, it will be) thats why quest is out. I am sick of paying $60 a month to Comcast when everyone else charges less. (I wish some other cable providers would come into our market :-\ )

So basically what satelite or similar providers do you guys know of and whats their costs? www.thebluezone.com is the only one I know of and I would go with them but I dont think they are available at my address yet.

Come on guys, what suggestions do ya got? :D

I'm paying the $60 Comcast bill too.

I think its retarded when all other cable companies offer HS internet for like $30 or less (for more speed than what Comcast offers too) :-\

and another gripe is by the TOS you aren't supposed to host a web server

I used to go through These Guys until I moved and ended up getting comcast. But there not available there either. I might start working part time for them installing Radios and I know they have a friend that runs a bussiness more down your way. I don't know of availability or the name so I would have to talk to them about suggestions out your way. Yes I miss my $30 a month payments :-\

There is no such thing as cheap sattelite so don't even go there. You would psend 600$ on equipment and get 256/256. We have that here where I work in wyoming and it sucks fat ass compared to my comcast.

Comcast is about as fast as you are going to get if you are worried about speed. Wireless is probably the next big thing, I think they had teamwifi.net in my neighborhood but their media blitz was too small so they didn't get the word out.

I just heard that within the next few days that Comcast is stepping up the 3mb downstream to a 6mb for current subscribers. :D

But I also hear that the upstream will stay the same. wtf?

Any word of Verizon FIOS coming out this way? That would rock.

The default Comcrap package is 4Mb/384Kb (up from 3Mb/256Kb in Janfeburay) The "Pro" is 6Mb/768Kb (up from 4Mb/384Kb in Janfebuary) The "Pro" is/was +$10/month

The Business package is the same speed as the "Pro" with static ip and a few other "perks" for $99/month with contract.

And NONE of them are truly unlimited.

Try Teamwifi for alternate internet option

I and some of my neighbors don't have access to broadband or dsl. We hooked up with teamwifi and there service seems pretty decent. They tried upgrading some equipment in september, but that backfired on them. So there was a 3 week period of shotty service :mad2: , but it looks like they got it all figured out. Haven't had any problems with them since. :D :p

Check out there site at teamwifi.net. I think they have there phone number on there website. Anyways, hope this helps you out. :greg:

Might try Wireless Beehive, not sure if they serve Magna or what... or how good they are, but they are at least an option... in Tooele, anyway.

I was having a hard time finding somebody other than qwest in Lehi, Earthlink (suprisingly enough) was available in my area. 29.99 for first 12 mos and 39.99 after that. I am pulling down a minimum of 1.2 even during peak.

being a WISP opens a can. I would only advise it if you have a minimum of 5-6 hrs per day and have a really good working knowledge of radio the .11 standard etc. At-1 from sprint or ATT will run you about $399/month. at 1.5 symetrical. If you're seriously thinking about this you will want to get freq hopping gear like alvarion.

Hey that's who I go through.... :greg:[/QUOTE

You share your neighbors wifi right?
So what kind of antennas and you and your neighbor using?

I have a 7dB gain antenna mounted on the freeze board of my gabble. It covers the neighbors (laptop) to the west really well (no charge, access to skidsteer, snowmobiles, ect..). It also covers the house across the street to the south (6 lbs of hamburger/month) using a linksys WRT54G with standard antenna. The only other person I currently have hooked up is 2 blocks north across hunter pall park, the remote in this case uses a 14dB panel type directional antenna mounted inside the gabble end.

5-6 hrs per day doing what?
I'm talking hobbyist wisp stuff - WRT54Gs (broadcom) running sveasoft firmware. It would only take a few subscribers to make it affordable.

If your interested check out the linksys forum @ sveasoft.com

Multi-path interferance it's not as easy as turning it on. at 7DB thats about 1/2 a watt Your range is about 440' at 36 DB it is a completely different ball game If You're going to do it right ---

if you wanted to re-sell what you already have a simple WIFI AP like a Dlink G700 AP works great. Generally there are provisions in a contract to limit this.

FWIW, if qwest dsl is available to you then you can get DSL form just about anyone...

funny this was brought back up. I am still trying to get BlueZone and it was supposed to be up and going in my area in about "30 days" (that was about the time I posted this  ) but still nothing. My neighbors all have Comcast right now and I wouldn't want to worry about sharing with them because I am always messing around with my network, if I take it down (by accident or on purpose) I don't want to worry about upsetting them.
