It is more than possible...
Old Sluice on the Rubicon, disabled rig... so FIVE of us hop in a freinds FJ40... and high tail it all the way out in the dark having never done Cadillac hill & such.
We hop in the tow rig @ the TH, head to Reno, parts stores are all closed... so we camp out on the trailer, stop by a Napa in the morning for a warranty, and head back in. We had the rig fixed in a hurry and back with our group, though 2 in our groups broke axles in the meantime. It was a very humbling trip.
I also broke a pitman arm in half... it literally snapped in two at the waterfall on Cat Canyon. We used a rambo key chain saw to cut 5" from a high lift handle, smosh it into an oval and sleeved the two broken halfs. We used a roll of ductape and 20' of parachute cord to keep the cast together. Amazingly it held to get us back to the trailhead. I now carry a spare pitman arm...
