I Have a question for all you buggie owners. Do you carry insurance on the buggie and if so what kind? Thanks for any feed back.

I tried to insure it, but couldn't find anyone to cover it. I know a couple guys with high dollar comp rigs have insured them as some sort of race equipment.

I had also heard there was a company writing a policy specifically for rock crawlers. I don't know who it was or if it ever came to be, so thats pretty much no help.

I'm suprised they wont insure it as an OHV, same as an ATV or a side-by-side. I mean if you have the OHV tag it should be the same right?

I tried to insure my last couple of buggies and was denied. I will try to insure this new one either as an OHV or a 1953 Willys.

no. thats like saying all motorcycles are the same to insure. a bike isn't a bike isn't a bike. different levels of dangers and unless insurance companies know what those dangers are and what it would cost to fix/repair/heal things and people in a bad accident, they have a hard time underwriting a policy.

You might check with Rhett on here, I know he was/is an insurance agent and was covering them.

The big difference between a custom buggy and an ATV is the "custom" nature of the buggy.

With a mass-produced ATV, an insurance company has resources available to accurately dictate and track its value over time.

Are you looking for comprehensive or a liability coverage?

I think liability insurance would be easier to get, and frankly I think all OHV's used on public lands should have to carry it.

It seems like whether a buggy can be insured or not is up to the insurance agent. My buggy is registered as an OHV and has full coverage. The agent and I agreed on its value. I think it helped to have 3 other cars and the homeowners insurance with him and no claims. A friend of mine is insured by the same company, but his agent wouldn't touch his buggy.

some of the Idaho guys just keep the vin (any vin) on the tube somewhere and register it then insure it that way.

That sounds good in theory, but what happens when a claim is filed and the insurance adjuster wants to see your "1990 Jeep YJ w/ VIN#blah, blah, blah", but its simply a YJ frame with a mess of tubes welded to it?

Or in the case of theft, are they simply going to give you the current market value of that same "1990 YJ" (the one you've got 30k into it), then you've got to fight with them over aftermarket parts and modifications? (still better than getting nothing, I suppose...)

I'm not saying that there isn't an ideal insurance policy out there somewhere, but there are going to be potential "gray areas".

No offense to any insurance guys out there, but do you think an insurance company cares about being fair to you? They are in business to pay only on claims they "have to" and at the lowest cost. This is where they may point out those "gray areas" regarding your rig.

The most important question is this: Has anyone here filed a claim in such a situation and what was the outcome?

I would guess the only guys getting paid fair for claims are the ones that have that predetermined insured amount already set up if something happens. Which I bet is not cheap

Not having liability on the K5 used to scare the crap out of me on busy trails. The underwriters for my insurance company didn't like the open cab or the way the fuel cell was tied down.... other than that I think they would have insured it.

My rig isn't full buggy, just an old Bronco with a roll cage and a beat to crap body. I have it insured for stated value. The premium isn't too bad. Seems like it's bad when I am not using it though. It has a chance of fire/theft so I insure it.

It wasn't really easy to agree on a stated value, but with aftermarket parts I was able to justify the amount.

The open cab and the fuel cell were the only things that scared the underwriters?:rofl::rofl:
