Built Rig

You see or hear these different people claim they have a "built rig". At what point is it "built"? What is required to be classified as "built"? What is your definition of a "built rig"?

Are we talking; yeah I built my rig or had my rig built like in fabricated? Or the level of capability a rig has reached and the trails/obstacles it can conquer.

Who knows? Sometimes I think that mine is "built"..... but then I see the Buggies on 40's and 4 links, And mine is really just a truck with a lift.

I think a buggy is in a different league from say a "fullbodied rig".

both good points. Not to be too "zen" about it...But I think that "built" is more a state of mind or superior ability due to experience.

Excellent question. I'll go out on a limb and take a stab at a definition, since nobody else will.

"Built" can be a range from mild up to custom buggy. So to me the bare minimum to qualify for mildly built, would be reasonable size tires (33s, maybe?), with proper lift (if necessary) to fit those tires, and at least one locking differential. I think that would be a place to start at minimum.

Thats was the question I was trying to get to the bottom of. I was leaning toward a rig that is more then a daily driver although some people I'm sure drive "built rigs" that can complete at least moderate trails. Modifications consist of lift/suspension changes, tires, drivetrain mods, and gearing. I believe gearing changes could seperate some fo the bulk of the rigs, whether axle, t case, or trans :D

IMO, its a different answer for each person. I don't think you can set a standard of what "built" is. For some (my uncle for example) 32s on a TJ with a small lift (2", budget boost, etc) is "built rig"...to me that may as well be stock. Another guy at my work has a stock rubicon Tomb Raider Edition and to him, his is "built". For me, my deffinition of "built" is closer to Braden's.

lift, cut/modified fenders(depends on the rig), lockers (two in my opinion), 33" tires at least, and some fabrication like bumpers, cage or rocksliders.
i personally think a rig must have a cage to be considered built. a stock rollbar might work. if its a jeep, the d35 really makes it not built as mbryson said(preferrably no d30 either). oh and bolting a bunch of stuff to your rig does not make it built.
i hope i have something helpful here

this is my opinion on the minimum requierments to be "built"
yj= soa 35s lockers
tj= got to have long arms lockers
xj= also got to have long arms lockers
sami= soa 33s lockers
toy=gotta have dual cases and 35s(i just got my dual cases and 35s :D )

i guess to some, anything over stock could be considered built. in my case the definition of built has changed over the last ten years or so. as my involvement in this sport goes up, the built standard gets higher as well.

when i first got into this, a 3" lift and 31" tires was built. as long as it was all spring, and no blocks or pucks. that was before i new what i was doing or talking about.

now i am fairly well beyond that and getting ready to go farther and i dont consider my jeep built. i consider it capable. i guess now when i think of built, i think of the competition buggies. and that is a level i have no intention of achieving.

if i had to label something built, it would have to have 35" tires or larger, lockers front and rear, upgraded axles,(larger or stronger than stock) roll cage, winch, spare parts and tools. dont forget the protection. (skids, and such) some form of long travel suspension.

it should not have any chrome, or a fancy exhaust tip that makes it sound obnoxious. a pretty paint job is not necessary, neither are fancy shinny wheels.

most importantly i think the driver is as important as any modification. if you know how to drive and know what you are doing, it doesnt matter how built your rig is. you will be able to know your limits and have a good time anyway.
