I know its hard to believe but I would look at your local system before blaming it on your neighbors. In my neighborhood Comcast is the only option for highspeed, we are all on the same line and I know there are a bunch of us that have it (I can get on atleast three wireless networks from my office right now that are all comcast), and I know the apartment complex by me uses comcast for all its occupants as well, my point is...there's a ton of people on this line and I have never had my speed drop below what DSLs fastest is. BTW, who are you with that you are only getting 1M? Comcast's slowest is still 3M and their standard is 4M and they have up to 8M available.

EDIT: oh yeah, and if something else ever becomes avaialbel I will swtich simply for the fact that righ tnow I am not supposed to be hosting my server that I am :D

Local network is all GIGE --> 3.0 Ghz P4 800Mhz FSB 4 Gb Mem sata raid 5 not local system (I'm a developer gotta have the best). Host my own DHCP, Email and DNS. I have the local Cable Company - they suck, poorly engineered network, They only offer up to 1M service. I have a P4 Running OSX Tiger. on a FBSD 5.2.0 For testing.

I'm not saying your system is slow, it just may be configured poorly for cable internet. Check out DSLReports.com for some good tips on configuring and tweaking your system. and FWIW, your GigE will do nothing for your internet, you do realize that right

I have the MTU shaved down to 576 at my Router, the GiG E is because I have 10 or so machines, some fast, some slow. Some Unix Some Mac, Some Windows. I was just making the point that it isn't the internal network, I have hooked directly to the MOdem and I can see broadcast traffic from all the other machines, When all the other machines are online, my connection speed gets shot to Sh1t. They must be using DS1 Equivelent mapping at the CMTS. Probabbly a Crisko I mean Cisco.

I guess I'm just used to doing things at work, we have a redundant oc12 Bilink connection to the internet, about 1.2Gbps. We do some reselling to other people in the building, but most of it is for resiliency. the Internet is instant. Then I get home and it's like pulling teeth.

cable? Your IP tells me that you are on Emerytelcom DSL.

And the cable company in Carbon County does suck, very badly. They are PRECIS and last I heard is that their customer connection bank is relayed via satelight. Not sure if this is how it still is or not... but that's how it was when I lived down there last year.

I used to have the cable problem, until Verizon came out with FIOS (fiber optic internet service). It is the same cost as cable, downloads at 5m, and uploads at 3.

But . . . verizon seems to be slowly rolling this out. Pittsburgh was one of their first markets.
Does Utah have any fiber optic systems up and running yet?

I feel bad for people that had shotty cable companies in their cities. Comcast in Ogden has always been lighnint fast, reliable as hell, and priced...about the same as everything else wen you consider tertiary expenses. The only thing I am thinking about is getting the extra u/l d/l bandwidth for like 5$ a month.

I tried the upgraded package and saw no increase at all in download and my upload was just a little faster, not worth the extra $10 they charge ya for it. Comcast is actually one of the most expensive companies around, most other states have cable internet for $30 or less a montha nd DSL for abotu the same. You can get into a DSL package around here for $35-$40 with everything. I know personally I am paying just a hair under $60 a month for my comcast.

Don't bother, it isn't unlimited.... it's "unlimited"

I got banned for using it too much.

Are you still on a promotion?

My Comcast was $99 a month for the "pro" net and the low end digital (the "pro" was $60 of it).
