So Steve J. and Kurt what are you doing about it instead of complaining and dropping out. U4 could use some help.

Jack bud. Folks don't want to hop on a train wreck, its neither inspiring nor beneficial. I left because the majority of the BOD was interested in planning conventions and selling hat pins. I'm not convinced a damn thing has changed and give the U4 marketing of the recent NPLD its very clear nothing has. There is a critical identity crisis of what U4 is and should be to different groups. I clearly identified the things that would need to change when Bear was President, I have clearly identified the things that would need to change with Tacoma. Shit eating grins go only so far, the results speak for themselves. Why would I join a BOD that has a divergent mission as my own. At this point SUWA and I have as much in common, we both enjoy the outdoors and we both loathe the idea of it being destroyed by rogue users, on foot, on wheels, on oil rigs.

As to what I'm doing, attending service projects (remind me how many of your BOD members were at sanctioned projects?), writing letters on behalf of ExpeditionUtah and the clubs I'm a member of, teaching Tread Lightly classes and working with WAG's to develop some OHV education that all sides could support. I don't need U4 BOD meetings and groupthink to slow down my process and I have more important things to do then sit in a room full of folks deciding the next thing U4 should put their name on and sell instead of work in proactive means. I've said my peace over and over, I felt my 3 years as President and 5 on the BOD were a great use of my time and I felt we had the U4 heading in a very positive direction. Can current BOD members say that? We've not seen a positive thread re: U4 in months and while its easy for you to sit back and call us 'complainers' its easy for us to sit back and call you inefficient. We've been promised changes, more notice, more meeting minutes, more pro-activity... and yet you want me to attach my name to that. Please. :p

Call me out Jack, I enjoy confrontation... but don't have the nerve to call me a 'complainer' when reality smacks you in the face.

For $125,000 a year, we'll come and implement the plan I handed you in 2008. Before the board voted in favor of more important projects like hat pins, oral surgery for Meat and membership jackets.

SNAP!

PS, Steve. When I go to sleep each night I can find comfort in the fact I handed of a working and prospering U4 to the next chump.

You know I realy love you guys and respect what both of you tried to do but dog gone it ( or #%)(^&$%#*&) it is hard to hear the same complaints over and over when a few of us in U4 are trying to get back all the people that were driven away and we are busting our buns to keep things moving along. If there was a better group out there in Utah I would be a part of it but I honestly believe with your help and a few more dedicated people U4 could be what is needed for 4x4's in this great four wheeling state. The way I see it there are not enough people that four wheel that actually believe that their way of life is in danger so why make a big deal out of it. I am afraid this state will never have a really active group until it is lost and then it will be too late. Well abuse did not work for either of us so I guess we just keep trudging along until we are dead or it is lost. Oh, by the way I posted on u4wda.org some of the things we have been doing.

...Oh, by the way I posted on u4wda.org some of the things we have been doing.

Not finding anything Jack, still shows 'info coming for NPLD'. Nothing on Coyote Canyon (btw did U4 submit an official comment?), nothing on current projects... what am I missing?

Again Jack, if there were 10 of you sitting around a BOD meeting every month I would be there begging to help and be part of the momentum. Until then...

Double snap!

I did too, but I should have picked a better chump. :(

when a few of us in U4 are trying to get back all the people that were driven away and we are busting our buns to keep things moving along.

I understand why you take it personally, but I don't think anyone is deriding the efforts of the few hard working volunteers involved. Rather the ineptitude of the group as a whole. In this case, the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

I honestly believe with your help and a few more dedicated people U4 could be what is needed for 4x4's in this great four wheeling state.

When a potential volunteer shows up to a meeting where the organization doesn't even know how many members it has, forgets to pay it's PO box bill, has a treasurer who hasn't deposited a check in two months, or some other similar infrastructure problem, it's hard for anyone to get motivated to be involved. So if you've got more than 1 literate person at each meeting, why can't you even process memberships?

Take care of infrastructure first, and I'll be the first one there to help with a land use project. But I'm not spending another five years keeping the plumbing working in an organization where the biggest concern is what color hats to order.

The way I see it there are not enough people that four wheel that actually believe that their way of life is in danger so why make a big deal out of it.

Possibly, but I think the awareness has gotten much better in the last 5-7 years. But no one has an outlet for doing anything, therefore the need for a good association and good land use groups. We don't have those now. I wish we did. I wish U4WDA didn't spend the last 3 years dismantling the things we all spent the previous 3 years building.

Kudos to you for picking up and doing your part.Littering has always been so frustrating for me, and not just in the fun spots, all over. I was fishing up A.F. canyon and pulled litter out of the river and got a bit frustrated. Thought about hosting a "Keep AF canyon clean" event or something just to emphasize the importance of keeping one of the many "close" natural and beautiful playgrounds clean!

That was our plan. Alan Taylor and I stood at Forest Lake with the then District Ranger discussing this idea. Her response? "Why would I open Pittsburgh Lake? Look at this mess." We came up with a five year plan. It actually would have ended this season.

I didn't know the details, I heard the story the last time I was up Mineral Basin. Good try.

It's OUR land.
WE ultimately control it. WE elect officials who appoint others.
Not a perfect system but far better than most.

lol!

If there were no Forest Service and BHO proposed it's creation as well as all the National Parks today, WE could asks the questions like "what is the origin of debt?" but we weren't voters when these agencies were created and we were born into "the system". It WAS our land and WE decided the government was a better steward of it than US either by action or inaction.

Some people have been hurt.... I hope that one day they can heal.

As Public Relations Director for the U4 I'm assuming this is the official stance? Everything is fine and dandy with U4, your just hearing from complainers and those with hurt feelings.

You can bill it off as hurt feelings and Jack can bill it off as complaining, I would probably try to dress up the situation if my name were on the paperwork too :D. Did my complaining stop U4 from even sending out an f-ing email for NPLD? Did Steve's hurt feelings keep U4 from commenting on the latest travel management plans? We both know the answer is no, U4 is dropping the ball and nobody is inspired in the least bit to board a sinking ship. Focus the existing manpower on meaningful projects and fulfill existing obligations and others will. U4 does not lack the manpower to get the ball rolling, it lacks the focus and direction, simple as that. This is absolutely no different than the U4WDA I became involved with in 2002, fixable, yes... broken due to bad feelings, no ;)

Sshhhh!

I'm working on my letter to William "Stratton" Wallace now...

Dear William Wallace,

I appreciate you taking the time to read my letter. I know between revolutions and revenge killings you have an extremely busy schedule. When you have the time, I would like the following changes made:

Utah succeeds from the Union and becomes the independent State of Deseret, retaining its original chartered borders. Fillmore becomes capitol once again.

The forest Lands will be managed by the Beehive Forestry Company and the desert lands by the Beehive Sand Company.

This should be a good start. Again, thanks for your time and attention. You are a true Patriot!

I try to avoid getting involved in these threads, but for the record, U4 has been involved in and made comments on the latest rounds of RMP's notably Glen Canyon NRA, St. George BLM Travel Plan and new Cedar City BLM RMP. I know, I wrote the comments myself. Yes, there is a big problem with focus and communication.

Just sayin'

Could you direct me to where? I can't seem to find it, I suck at the interwebz tonight.

Go to u4wda.org
Click on Land Use at the bottom
Click on Read More under U4WDA IN ACTION

If that does not work try this.

U4WDA YEAR TO DATE REPORT
LAND USE
BY JACK JOHNSTON
September 15, 2011
The following is a brief summary of some of the things U4 has been active in promoting on behalf of the
OHV community.
In January a visit was made to Juan Palma, BLM Utah State Director, as a follow up to visits made to Juan
Palma and Bob Abbey (BLM Director) last year. Specifically Paria River Canyon and Canaan Mountain
Road were discussed. The possibility of signing a Memo of Understanding with the BLM was also discussed.
As of this writing we have received no feedback from the BLM. We have contacted John Tanner, Hatch’s
Office, and Wade Garrett, Chaffetz Office, asking for assistance in this.
The Wilderness and Roadless Release Act H.R. 1581 was introduced in the House in April with Utah’s
Rob Bishop as a co-sponsor. We need to encourage passage of this bill with our representatives as it
would release Wilderness Study Areas (WSA) managed by the BLM for multiple-use. This would
basically help all users of public lands.
Not enough can be said for the efforts being made in some of our southern counties. In particular
Emery, San Juan, and Kane Counties have made some great strides towards establishing road usage and
keeping them open to the public. We support and need to thank these individuals and organizations:
Mark Habbeshaw, Jeff Stevens, Don Black, Brian Hawthorne, Mike Swenson, Paul Anderson, USA-ALL,
BRC, CANYON COUNTRY 4X4, MOAB FRENDS-FOUR-WHEELING, RED ROCK 4-WHEELERS, and TAKE BACK
UTAH. I know there are others but these are the ones I remember off the top of my aging brain.
The SUWA lawsuit against the BLM in Canyon Lands is dragging on without much to report. This suit
started in 2008 with a change made in 2009. The best source of information would either be Jeff Stevens
or BRC at (www.sharetrails.org).
Meetings were held with SUWA and the Wilderness Society to discuss the possibility of some sort of
middle ground that we might be able to agree with. Both groups have personable and up front
representatives but I personally believe that SUWA is too dogmatic in their views but there is a
possibility with the Wilderness Society. Part of the discussion was about Cherry Stemming roads into
WSA’s that may not be necessary if HR 1581 (see above) becomes a reality.
We all need to remember that we, all of us, are responsible for what happens to our way of life. Our
actions on the trail; our voting and public involvement; our support and participation with clubs and
organizations that represent us to the world.
