Work has been stupid busy for the last few weeks. Good for the paycheck but horrible for progress.

I did get my spacers for the steering joints and got the double sheer tabs all tacked in place

just some simple aluminum spacers. 5/16' thick and the same OD as the ears of my joints. I had sixB here on the board turn them for me and they are perfect! Best part is he works for beer. Hehehehe :greg:

As you can see in this pic, the spacers were required to get the double sheer tab even with the caliper bracket. This gives me a good weld prep and still leaves room for the brake lines on the calipers

this pic didn't turn out great but it shows the fancy gusset that Skipped Link includes with the double sheer tabs

Its looking like another 2 weeks of solid work and then I may be dead slow. Im hoping for it to get some serious garage time in. Im planning on getting some 2"x.120 wall DOM this week. It will be nice to have it looking like a full rig again.

So next on the list is steering ram mounts.

I started with the posterboard and scissors to get the shape of the housing. Then used the Chinese plas to cut out some plate

The plan is to wrap the plate with tubing. This needs to be tough since Im sure it will see some big rocks up close and personal. I wanted to use 2" .25" wall tube. Same as my tie rods will be. But I didn't buy enough and after pricing it again.....I decided I better come up with a cheaper option. After looking thru my scrap pile I found some 2".120" tube long enough for the job. And I have a stick of 1.75" .120" so I made my own .25" wall tube. Now to see if the bender will bend it.

It was a little slow but it bent up nice

next I cut the ends off and shaped the plate to fit the tube

next up some bracing. I played around with a couple ideas and liked this one the best. It leaves a hole in the plate but it will serve as a good drain

and match the other side......well.....close enough

figured a little gusseting underneath wouldn't hurt anything.

I may add some more underneath but I don't think it needs it. This is 3 times the mount I had on my rockwells and never had a problem with them

Tube adapters are coming in the mail for the tierods and that will mean minus some shock tabs, the back axle will be ready for finish welding. I cant really place the tabs til I build something to bolt the shocks to. haha

And just for Gravy train

outer planetary hubs.

Pretty self explanatory. Outer hub has a solid mounted gear that the planetary gears sit in. Axle shaft spins the planets and waaaallaa gear reduction

Do you fill the planetary boxes with oil or something? I'm assuming grease probably wouldn't lube them well enough...

yes they are oil bath. Along with the wheel bearings in there.

Speaking of which, I better start saving pennies for a few 5 gallon buckets of gear oil!

Great work on the ram platform. Looks BEEFY.

I'm not a Mog expert by any means but I ran them for 2 painful years, I recall something about speed limitations, but I didn't have to worry about it at crawling speeds.

I think the coolest pic is the anti gravity floating water bottle.

Nice work Cheston, looks like things are coming together nicely!!!

That's pretty funny!

What is the issue with the Mog portal boxes and speed? Do they get hot or something? (if any Mog-knowledgeable people are watching)

Correct, heat is an issue for extended run times with running traditional drum brakes... running a disk brake conversion helps with heat dissipation in the aftermarket world. Also experts recommend running redline brand oil for shock load resistance (the biggest pitfall for mogs imho, chip or even crack either reduction gear and the cast box goes BOOM).

Typically with a 80-85hp Unimog that has a 6 spd standard trans the max speed is 107 kph / 66.5 mph with ~39-41" tires from the factory.... that's how you get a speed rating for safety, now add 4 wheels disks, upgraded motor, trans, 44-47" tires and portal box gear oil and there is really no "max speed" the box is limited to. I personally have went about 55mph for about an hour or more and never had any excessive heat buildup in my portal boxes.

Continuing on with steering

I bent up the mount for the front axle. Basically just the same as the rear

Next up after taking some measurements, I cut some 2"x.25" wall tube for tie rods and boogered in the tube bungs. Then twisted it all together
Steering is all ready for finish welding
