Chit has been slow for a while...

What did you broke?
Well, "broke" doesn't really do justice to what happened, destroyed is a little more appropriate. It's our front axle and the long side and stub shaft are now mangled and the u-joint is GONE. Like nowhere to be seen, missing in action, rest in peace, etc. And all that we did was drive through a gi-normous snow bank that tried to eat the Bronco. :D My thoughts are that I possibly blew out the cap on the u-joint the last time we went out and I just didn't know it and then the burying of the vehicle and the subsequent raw V-8 muscle that was required to extract said vehicle was what sent the poor shafts over the edge. The rest of the story is that right after New Year's Yellowbronco threw out his back dancing at a wedding reception. The dancing was freakin' hilarious, but him not walking wasn't that funny. We had planned a trip the very next day and being the high maintance wife I am, I was not missing a day of rock crawling just because Chris was in excrutiating pain. So I stuffed him in the truck with lots of painkillers and an ice pack, hooked up the gooseneck, loaded the Bronco, and off we went. It was great! But at the end of the day, I did hear a funny popping noise and now in hind sight I think it was a cap off the u-joint. In his sad state, Chris wasn't able to look at it that day and we both kind of forgot about it until halfway through Bronco extraction from snowdrift, the front axle started making this funny noise and suddenly I remembered. :ugh: But this story has a happy ending, we found a screaming deal on a whole set of shafts on ebay and Chris is now back among the walking!! And, I don't have to be the man of the house anymore! :)

Broke back Mountain that is................ :redneck:

:p Are you talkin' trash about our beautiful Bronco???

just two broken shafts and a joint? That's just some bush league amateur stuff if you ask me.

I broke the driver's front joint (which exploded and took both shafts with it), the passenger joint (which broke and took the stub shaft with it), passenger hub and rear caliper bracket all in about 2 minutes. And then drove out of the trail with only rear digs and front brakes.

I've forgotten more about 44 breakage than you sucka's will ever know! :D :D

I have pictures and witnesses. This is not tech, just reminiscing about how awesome I am. If it were tech it would be heresay and unsubstantiated rumor.

It was day 2 of my 5 day trip. The first day I broke the joint on the passenger side which took out both shafts. I swapped shafts for day two. I had a joint and a long side inner but not more stub shafts.

So in 2 days the total was 5 shafts, 3 joints, 2 hubs, and 1 caliper bracket.

Have I told you guys how I feel about 44 parts lol

Tell Cody that you have a 60 in front (wether you do or not), he needs to be deflated a bit.

Blah blah. I took out everything from the inner C out, ON THE ROAD! Both shafts, the joint, the outer knuckle, caliper, rotor, spindle, rim, AND tire.

Really sucks losing a wheel bearing at 75mph. :( :D

does that even count? We're talking wheelin carnage here!

maybe broncomama does have a 60. Last time I saw it was a 44 though (and it had a broken joint). they do come off as the type that would upgrade though.

In that case, thats a good break.

Zoinks! Yes, that would really bite. Yellowbronco was hauling our trencher to a job this summer and had a tire from the trailer pass him on the highway. Then that exact same thing happened AGAIN, 3 weeks later. Fortunately no one was hurt and he did not divorce me after I busted up laughing when he told me what had happened...:)

Gosh, I'm glad to know that we look like the type of people who would be wise and put in a 60! :) Sadly though, that's not the truth, it's still a 44. Granted it's a different 44 from the last time we broke with you, but still a sad, pathetic 44 none the less. Maybe one day after we've spent an assload of money on the 44, we'll upgrade to something a bit beefier! :D

I am embrassed to say that we have spent more time debating this fact alone than anything else in our life. Our last date night was spent "discussing" this and here's the problem. Our hydro steering and 4 link is all welded and set up to the 44. So to do a swap would be very costly and quite a pain in the bahookie. The general game plan today is to do a hybrid 44/60. Leaving the outer 44 intact with all the goodies welded to it, but swapping out all the innerds for 60 shafts, joints, etc. It's definitely a sign when Yellowbronco changes axle shafts more often than the oil in our vehicles.

 Women like you are few and far between.

Did you two build it or have it built? If you are doing the work on it... shouldn't be that much money to convert everything over. Worth the piece of mind. Ask Cody how many times he paid for a D60 in D44 parts ;)

The suspension was done by Avalanche Engineering as well as the steering. The steering isn't an issue, it's the mounts for the links and the coilovers that concern me. My fear is that once taken apart, it could turn into a nightmare very easily. Our other factor with keeping the 44 is that as of this point, we're only blowing out caps on the u-joints which in turn ruins the axle. A very lucky boy got a welder for Christmas so that issue is now solved. I'll be curious to see what the breakage will be now. The other road we haven't traveled down is upgrading the actual shafts and u-joints. Right now it is a completely stock axle so there's a whole other realm of fun to blow money on. I think with some chrome mollys, I have no idea how to spell that, and some snazzy ctm's we'll be good to go. I have sworn many times that I won't be one of those crazy people who throws a ton of money into a worthless axle though so that's where the 3 strikes and you're out rule comes into play. If we continue to break with beefy shafts and ctm's, then fear be damned, we'll put in a 60! :greg:

You need a 60. Yes you do!

I can bring you one from Highhonda if you want. ;)
Hmmmm, does that mean you're coming to lovely Pagosa Springs, CO. for a visit????

Well, I put a set of Yukon alloy shafts and the bobby long cryo-treated joints w/ full circle caps in and that reduced the carnage to my superwinch hubs. I didn't mind changing out hubs--takes 5 minutes, have a life time warrenty, and slugs are easy parts to carry on the trail.

But, with as much time as you guys spend on the trail, I would just jump into the 60 and stop worrying about it. If there is a way to quantify all the time and irritation and lost trail time and the time of people waiting and the time tracking down spare stock 44 shafts and the money for that and the time to type how bad 44 parts suck and .....you get the point. all that time has to have some monetary value.
