I have to occasionally weld at work with TIG. I don't mind it, but cannot imagine doing it all day everyday. It would have to be one sweet job for me to ever consider welding for a proffession. For the money (in most cases) I don't think it's worth the crap that enters your lungs. Even with good exhaust the fumes and junk will get to ya in the long run just imo ;)

CNC pays decent if you work for the right company. It would get really boring most of the time though :-\

Welding and Machining... Have you considered industrial maintenance? I see lots of new stuff everyday. Ya it's boring but the pay is a lot better than just doing those two things alone, and it's far less repetitive. You never stop learning stuff too :)

Being a Fireman you could come home feeling like a hero most days :greg:

Hey Greg I though you were about to become unemployed? I know the railroad does weird things to their employees but what gives?

Skills for getting in the way?

Dispatcher 78? I need track and time.......:D

No sh!T!! MOW, get outta the way.;)

I'd love to see both you guys swing a spike maul, tamp up some ties, or fix a broken rail. Let's get the engineers & conductors on the ground and see you try do some track maint... I'd pay to see that! :p

I usually like my job... when it gets bad, it's usually due to some asshole supervisor. Being a machine operator, like I had been doing this year, was a great job. Easy work, not a lot of it and fun work.

I am currently not working, haven't been working since Oct. Long story short is that the area managers blew their budget early this year. Lots of guys got cut off. I could have bumped onto a system gang again, but I'd be working on the Pacific Coast and driving out and back every 8 days. With the new year the local managers will get a new budget, I should be back to work by Feb/March. I have worked for UP for 5 yrs without getting laid-off, so this was somewhat of a surprise.

In the meantime, I'm working on something on the side that should being in some good money and give me some business experience. I'm really interested in that type of stuff, looking for some passive income. ;)

Get your degree!!!! I have three and not using a one :) But whenever i went to apply somewhere they saw that i loved to learn and was always able to get a job. I have a BS in Fire Science and that was great in LA working on the fire department but the stress did me in. Its a great job but maybe just where i was i saw way to much and still have nightmares about it. Its a cool job but people dont think about what you see and do and what effect it has on your life. Then i decided to be a school teacher so i picked one up in Physical education then i realized i hate kids. third i wanted to be a pilot so off to flight school i went. Bad timing i guess because the airlines started laying off soi just picked up my private license and left it at that but finish the AS in Aviation Tech. And now look i am a wildlife rehabilition specialist lol has nothing to do with what i did in school but they saw my education history and pow i was in and learning a new career. Thank god for the Marine Corps for paying me to go to school but it seems your life changes and so does what you want to do as you get older so for now just finish you degree and live life you will find what you REALLY want to do someday but in the mean time just do good at what your doing and you may land your dream job. I did. My two cents

I have 2 degrees and I don't use either of them either. I could have done my job 100% as well before going to school, but I probably wouldn't have been able to get the job without the degree. Go world.

I've recently decided I want to teach a little bit. I'm going to go bust out an MBA at Westminster than try to get an adjunct professor spot at the U or Westmin.

I love teaching adjunct, but don't do it very often. It is a commitment for sure. I use my Master's degree and wish I had a PhD at times.
