Crawler or dirtbike

Ride, that's a no brainer. The only time I want to do another crawler is during the winter months when riding is limited/non-existant.

Ride! Way more places to ride than rock crawl around here.
I agree. And i don't have kids and stuff to take .

i got my bike almost a year ago and have hardly worked on my crawler since. Then I got a landrover in October and realized it can do everything around here and most of Moab, drive to the trail, have radio,heater,a/c , windshield and sleep in the back.

im debating parting out my rig and putting money into my bike and my rover

Honestly i was over crawlers 8 years ago. I still they're really cool but I have no desire to ever own again. Dirt bikes so much funner in my opinion far cheaper and easier to use. And then owning a utv allows me to take the family and I honestly have far more fun in my long travel utv then I ever did in any of my rock crawlers.

I ride more than I get out in my truck, but my life feels more incomplete without a 4x4. For the first few months of riding season I am 100% focused on riding and I ask myself the same question you just asked. Then I forget to plan a wheeling trip for a few weeks and my life feels crazy out of balance. It always takes me a week or two to realize what's missing: camping trips with my family. I don't know how else to describe it. As much as I love riding, it can never replace my need to get out and camp/wheel once a month. If I had to pick between my dirt bike and my truck, my truck would win hands down. Then again, my truck isn't exactly a crawler. It's way easier to load up the dirt bikes and head out for an afternoon than to load up the crawler and run to moab and back (though that's possible too).

I've learned to plan my 4x4 trips first, then fit in the rest of the weekends with dirt biking. Actually, riding every thursday night keeps the dirt bike itch scratched, and leaves me weekends to do other stuff. That's the balance I've found lately. Towards the end of the fall, I don't feel the urge to ride every week, I kinda have it out of my system for a while.

I also think I ride and 4x4 for different reasons. I do both to get out away from it all and see the scenes, but the riding is far more adrenaline, high-paced action. The 4x4 for me is more relaxing and overall therapudic. One could never replace the other, they're two entirely different activities for me, aside from the dirt roads and scenery.

I go thru phases.

Right now I only want to ride tho

Yeah I'm sure I will miss crawling . My buggy still needs some $$
when I do get it done the only way I have to get it and my girlfriends buggy to the trail gets horrible mileage and I do not have much money.

it just seems like In my position I will get alot more use out of the rover(dd /weekend wheeler) and the dirtbike.

although at Easter I sat at suicide hill and was pretty and was sad I had no rig to climb it..

maybe I just need to get better on the bike.

i really like how much faster I can do a trail on the bike

I like how much faster I can ride a trail on a dirt bike, and I like how much slower I can drive a trail in my 4x4. :D It just depends on if I'm going for a relaxing adventurous weekend or an adrenaline-packed weekend. I don't get my adrenaline from crawling anymore, the stakes and costs are too high.

If we had an Old School Rock Crawl type event every 3 or 4 months, I would own a dedicated OHV crawler for sure.

Steve I used to get both from crawling, but now riding satisfys the need for adrenalin and I still have to rover with 33s an locked in the rear for camping and getting out.

i think living In Moab ruined me for crawling .

I used to get in my buggy and drive to Bfe often alone.

now it's a huge deal to go to Moab and cost alot.

I'm learning hvac kinda an apprentice type deal so I don't make much money and it just seems crazy to have so much Into a crawler that I can't afford to use.

im thinking about throwing some tarps over the crawler enjoying summer an my bike and then by fall maybe i will have motivation to finish the buggy

For me it's just about getting out. I never had the money to keep my crawlers going the way I wanted to or use them as often as I wanted to. Dirt bikes and side by sides are so much cheaper to use I find myself being able to get out enjoy life more than just sitting and looking at the internet dreaming of stuff I could never afford.

I never use to visit the site because I thought it was just a rock crawler site until Dugfab drag me out to my first fyto that's when I realized the site is more about people that enjoy getting out and participating in life then actual rock crawlers.

This is exactly why I try to build my rigs as quickly as possible. If it's just sitting there, I lose motivation and then I can't justify all the money that's tied up in it. When I had my '81 toy on 37's I realized that I overbuilt it for the trails around here, and it was only fun in Moab or St. George, though I never took it there because it required a tow vehicle, which was added expense. Maybe once or twice a year I miss having a hard core crawler, but that quickly passes when I realize I love my family and financial stability more than having a sick crawler. :D

put it this way...

what do you value most in life? What 5 things/activities/people are the most important and bring you the most joy in your life? Just listing them will be eye-opening. Then focus your time/$ on these things. If a crawler isn't top 5, you shouldn't feel bad selling it to make time/$ for the higher priorities. If crawling is top 5, even if you don't do it much, just be patient and eventually finish your buggy and build up your equipment until you can do it as much as you'd like.

These 5 things will change throughout your life. Some call it "growing up", some call it "making stupid decisions", and others call it "loving life" :D

It's crawling for me all the way. I've thought about ditching the Jeep and riding more but I just don't get the same sense of satisfaction from riding. I'm much better suited to a bunch of wheeling trips per year and one or two riding trips per year. It just works for me. I think a big part of it is my desire to push limits and the realization that I'm quite prone to injuries and the last time I broke my foot I got a blood clot. Not the best experience.

I went through the battle of keeping/selling my old XJ buggy and decided that selling it would be best for my situation at the time. I sometimes wonder what it would be like if I kept it and I might regret it for about a minute a year. I made the right call. From what I've seen you've been battling this for a while so it seems like the decision is pretty clear

Right now I am all about riding. I like 4x4, but I have got away from the "crawler" aspect of 4x4. I see very few, if any, trips in the future that are harder then Hole in the Rock trail. I just do not enjoy that type of 4x4 anymore without a dedicated rig. I enjoy the "expo" style of 4x4 now. (easier on the wallet)

If I had a dedicated rig and/or tow truck it would be different, but as it stand now, I prefer to ride over crawl.

I agree with much of what has been said, list your priorities. This will really help determine if you want to continue crawling or focus on riding.

Riding. Not that I don't appreciate the sport I've just never had the desire to build/own a dedicated rock crawler. Simply put I live waaayyyy too far away and don't make enough money to justify owning one. For ~$10 in gas I can go into the garage and jump on my bike and ride 10 minutes to endless and amazing trails in a very beautiful area. Having a plated dirt bike that can handle some street time is a no brainer for me.

That said I would gladly give up a weekend of riding to spend a weekend camping/exploring with the family in the Land Cruiser. It just depends on what everyone wants to do :D
