diesel exhaust

so i put a 5 inch magnaflow exhaust system on my 05 cummy and i damn near went deaf just driving up hills. it resonates so loud in the truck i couldn't believe it. the exhaust goes from 4 to 5 right off the turbo, no cat, into a straight through muffler and out the back. my buddy suggested taking the muffler out. that helped quite a bit with the interior resonation but now it sounds like i'm driving a john deer tractor. i looked at a corsa 4" muffler. they advertise that their mufflers eliminate interior noise and resonation. i love the sound of that but don't want to spend that kinda money if it really isn't going to work. any ideas or suggestion? anyone else have a cummy that has a nice sounding yet still freeflowing exhaust? i would like to stay 5" cause thats the pipe i have right now but if i gotta go 4" i will to get rid of that sound.
thanks

Okay, your first problem is the 5" pipe. I would suggest that you go to youtube and listen to others exhaust systems. This will give you some idea of the sound. Next try looking up videos that have an interoir camera. This will give you an idea of how a patitucular exhaust may sound inside the truck. If you are going to be at EJS then stop by the Pack Creek campground and I can show you my exhaust. Just some ideas for you.

Cummins are loud!! Ha The smaller diameter you go the less it will resonate. 4" is plenty big for most diesel trucks ppl own. I'd downsize if you can fork out the dough. Just my opinion though:)

My Freightliner runs a 5" exhaust on an 11 liter engine. I think the 14 liter engines run the same size. No offense intended, but I don't care how much the little Cummins is hopped up, you will get zero power gain with a 5" exhaust. It isn't needed unless you like the sound that huge pipe makes.

Flowmaster makes a muffler lined called "Hushpower" that might work for you. I've always run Silverline exhaust and have been really pleased at how quiet and well constructed they are.

And you wonder why they want to pass a law to make aftermarket exhausts illegal. I really hate the loud cummins exhausts. There is nothing that sounds worse than perhaps your exwife nagging.

For whatever reason the common rail trucks are known for that. A 5 inch exhaust on the old 12 valves is like a song of the Sirens... I can't think of anything better sounding as far as exhaust goes :greg:

thanks for all the advice. i ended up putting a 5" flowmaster hushpower muffler on. holy crap is it awesome. no resonation in the cab. its better than the stock setup muffler and cat. but still sounds lean and mean outside. nice low rumble, loud but not defening. love it. never seen a muffler with insides like this. i'll throw up some pics in a little bit. muffler was 200 bucks and shipped to my house in a day from summit.

Ha! Reminds me of the old Far Side comic with the old couple driving in their car. The wife has a muffler sticking out of her mouth. The man says, " boy the car sure is quite now that we have a new muffler."
