A coworker and I have discussed this in the past and have come up with a theory. We call it our "F'n G" theory" we must be ****ing Geniuses because theres no way this many people around us are so stupid. I can't remember the last time I felt I got good customer service, doesn't really bother me I just consider the source. If they were any better would they be taking my order or answering the phone at a call center? probably not! Anymore I'm just happy if whatever I'm ordering is correct when I get it. And really it's not just fast food and other minimum wage jobs. Try buying furniture hassle free, seems like anytime the wife and I are trying to buy something there ends up being some type of problem. I'll end my rant but I chalk it up to no pride in one's work anymore.

I admit that customer service is a thing of the past...which is why I quit working at Sears. They had me working alone most the day and I couldn't give what I considered to be quality customer service. But common courtesy is still something that retail employees should have. Simple acknowledgment goes a long way. If someone is working the counter you surely shouldn't have to clear you throat to get there attention to give them your money. The last time I went to 7-11 (about a year ago) the guy was so friendly I was blown away by it. I actually stopped and asked him what he was doing working there and he said he worked the evening shift because he liked meeting people and it gave him beer money (he had a regular day job). I went away thinking "I can't remember the last time I met a friendly retail clerk". He didn't give me outstanding service, he was just friendly and nice. I think our society has gone so far into the "give me" area that people just aren't nice anymore (unless they are getting something for it).

Anyway, here's to shopping online :D

Me and my wife went to dinner the other night at this little mexican type restaurant in Pleasant View. The kid waiting our table was no more than 17. He approached us introduced himself in the friendliest fashion and was the most polite kid I have ever encountered at any restaurant. He was back to our table with our drinks topped off, new chips and salsa etc. My wife then asked him how old he was and asked him if he realized how great of a job he was doing. He said most people just tell me what they want, do not smile back at me and never say thanks when I do a good job. We told him we appreciated it and told him to keep up the good work. I then pulled out a 20 dollar bill handed it to him and said here is a tip for You, put it in your pocket and do not disperse it with the others. When we left I left a normal tip and we were on our way. It was weird to have above average service especially from such a young kid. Most kids that age are little pricks that I just cant stand.
I think some of the problem is that customers expect kindness from the employee but they are complete ***holes to the person behind the counter, or the waitress etc.
But whatever when I go to the register I say how you doing if they do not reply just look at me with that methed over look to hell with them I don't say anything back. But if they are polite I have a little chit chat and tell them have a great day and away I go.
Yeah and the people at the 3500 West and 5600 South Maverik in Roy are pretty good people to deal with.

All of these stories remind me of when I was in kollege in New Jersey.

One afternoon I was standing in a long line of students who were also waiting to get stuff done at one of the school's administrative offices.

This guy get his turn at the counter and says, "I need you to..."

Immediately, the lady screamed in his face: "I don't have to do NOTHIN'!! I'm not your slave!!! I'm not your servant! Do you understand!?!"

He tried arguing but he didn't stand a chance against her white hot frothing rage.

Needless to say I was hella polite when it was my turn.

To bad you feel that way. I think the world is pretty awesome. Customer service goes a long way but I don't expect to have my butt kissed everytime I buy something and neither should Brett.

I'm not expecting to have my butt kissed, not even. What I do expect is for someone who is being paid to do a job, well, to do it. Reading text messages while I stand there with my card ready to go isn't doing their job.

I don't know if the world is going to hell in a hand basket, but American's have become lazy and uncaring. It's the plain and simple truth. People don't care anymore, as evidenced by what happened yesterday and simple observation. If I had the power, I'd be firing people left and right for their attitude at work.....but I don't :(

Brett I think you need to go talk to the manager about this one... Maverik doesn't want people like that working for their stores and will do something about this....

I feel that this world is going to shi@ faster than we can change it...

I might do that. Not sure if it would help, but it can't hurt right?

On the positive side at least she was responsible enough to get a job to feed her meth addiction and pay for her cell phone but its still unacceptable customer service I would have let her go on the spot.:D

No, I absolutely do not think you are expecting too much. That sort of thing drives me CRAZY. If it were me, I would most definitely call Maverik to share my experience. They can't make any changes if they aren't aware of the situation.

Bad customers killed customer service.

My biggest pet peeve is people that eat in small towns/small restaurants and ***** about service. Moab is probably the most prime example. Do you have any idea how hard it must be to hire competant service personel in a tiny little town, that only has an economy for 8 months? Do you really think there is the same pool of applicants available there, that are willing to offer great service, for probably less money (european tourists don't usually tip), live in a small town with high cost of living, and be unemployed every winter?

A couple weeks ago we were at that mexican restaurant by the liquor store, and one of the guys (from Iowa--who honestly believes the best authentic mexican food on the planet is in Iowa) with us was just ranting and raving about how slow the service was and was just pissed that the 16 y/o ESL kid wouldn't be able to split the tab up between the 15 people that all rolled in at different times within an hour period. I was embarrased to be associated with him and I tipped the kid over 100% on my 9 dollar tab because I thought he did a great job given the circumstances.

Small town restaurants are not where you go to get superwicked, awesome waiting skills. #1, there's just no need, and #2, like you said, the skillsets you get in small towns do not, and I would argue SHOULD not, include metropolitan-level waiting.

I'm usually refreshed by the reality of actual people making me some food, instead of waiting-robots. :D :D

good call on the 100% tip. ;)

I make it a point to be overly polite and patient with people that do jobs that I'm not willing (or can't) to do myself. Servers, fast food workers, hotel staff, retail sales people (or sales people in general). Having worked in the service industry for over a decade, I'm well aware of what they have to deal with and give them the benefit of the doubt.

It's painful to me to see a customer ***** out a server because there was a problem with the food or they are out of something. It's not like the server caused the problem--and if they did it most likely wasn't intentional. Like that asshole customer has never made a mistake before. Bitching out a sever BEFORE you get your food is even more brilliant.

But, I would be irritated if I was trying to pay for something and the gas station attendant was texting instead of helping. I think that is pretty rediculous that she couldn't wait 15 seconds to respond to that text.

I agree. I actually enjoy eating out in smaller towns and feeling relaxed instead of rushed. :)

I think that's a great answer. This is seen on large and small scales. Outsourcing work to other countries for cheap, sacrificing quality for some nickels... and hiring meth addicts to run the convenient store.. Both routes save some pennies, causing quality to suffer.

I've been in a few gas stations that i would promtly leave if i had my own children with me. Some poeple are just nuts/scary..

Most everyone starts out in a dead end Job. If your flipping burgers for wages you should be the best burger flipper in the industry, some day you may own that cafe your flipping burgers in.

Every Job that Ive landed was offered to me by someone who noticed me taking care of buisiness in my present setting, Now Im looking for help in my buisiness from employees of buisinesses that I patron.

Well the world needs ditch diggers and store clerks, not everyone can be a doctor or lawyer is what I tell myself. I know where you are coming from though. I hold myself on a pedestal sometimes because I graduated college (that I paid 100% for) and have a great job making great money with a future. Not everyone can say that. Its something I SHOULD be proud of. Chances are though that this toothless dead beat working at Maverik could go to college on our dime if they wanted to but they are content living in that gutter. They would rather be working dead end minimum wage jobs, drinking natural light, eating hot dogs, using a cricket cell phone, and driving a rusted out chevy celebrity than actually doing something to improve their lives. I think these people are trash as well and these types of people shouldnt be allowed to breed. Dead beats breed dead beats, filth breeds filth.

Its kind of ironic that you never hear about how hard it is to get pregnant from the poor is it?

I avoid Wal mart as all costs for these same reasons and because I have yet to find anyone who works there with an average IQ higher than a third grader.
