Don't Drink and Drive

My family got together for a big dinner tonight since my bro and his wife are moving to Ohio next week. He just bought a new Subaru with less than 100 miles on it. He and his wife had different schedules this afternoon, so they drove seperately, both parking on the street.

Around 7:20pm a drunk guy slams into the back of my bro's hundai, moving it 20 feet. Taking with it the new Subi, and pushing that into my other bro's(in law) Subi which is in the driveway.

My brother goes out to see if the guy is ok, to find the guy trying to start his SUV to leave. He struggles with the guy to get the key out of the ignition. The guy is concious, but won't say a word to my brother as he questions him about what the hell he was thinking, and why he reaks of booz.

Emergency crews show up in no time, haul the guy off on a stretcher(he was coughing up blood, and for most the night the police said he likely wasn't gonna make it).

It was about the point that the cops found the shotgun in the backseat of his GMC Envoy that they blocked the road until detectives could get there.

The Hundai is totalled, as is the Envoy, the new Subi needs a new bumper and some work to the pass. doors, possibly other work depending on what the dealership says. The other Subi in the driveway has a nice fatty white stripe on the bumper and that's it.

Thank God that nobody in my family was loading up their kids into the carseats when this asshat relocated all of the cars. Even better that he was stopped by parked cars(minus the one he previously totaled up the street from our house) rather than a family on a busier street.

The detectives were here til about 11:30, then the cars were towed. The word is that the guy will be ok, and was able to answe alot of questions for the cops... like the shotgun.. he was at a shooting range earlier(his poor dog was even in a kennel in the back).

This could've been so much worse. I wish it'd been my truck to take the hit rather than their cars. They're plans were to drive the Hundai to Ohio, and ship the Subi.

I'll post better pics when my sister sends them to me.

Freak that sucks. What is crazy is when you arrest them for DUI and they tell YOU the OFFICER that YOU are ruining their life.

It's not that hard, drink/have a good time.... Just don't freakin drive afterwards.

Glad no one in your family was hurt.

I hate drunk drivers. My girlfriend got in an accident a couple months ago and got hit right on her door by a drunk. Broke her femur, ending her great soccer career. Its been 5 months and she is still going through therapy.

Glad no one was hurt in this one.

Wow! That sucks, looks like he was going pretty fast too.

i'll take some pics in the daylight when i can of where the frame of the Hundai dug into the ground(20+feet from where it ended up)... no brakes, just a big smash.

The police downloaded the cars info, said it last recorded 35mph, but they believe that was logged when he hit the car up the street the first time(he repeatedly rammed it). The head scene investigator said that from his rough estimate, the SUV had to be going atleast 50mph+ when it hit.

Witnesses state that it looked like he was going to turn, but just didn't and slammed into the cars. They also said it didn't seem to them that he was exsessively speeding, but they were heading the opposite direction.

You know, i was just looking over Utah DUI consequences... WTF? that's all i have to say.

48 hours of jail time? while i know our jails are crowded, compensate the jail time with a bigger fine! $10k minimum would be nice.. start paying for bigger jails, improved roads, who knows...

I'm not sure the system is taking DUI's serious enough... Sure beating on animals is important to crack down on, but why does a dog beater have harsher punishment than a person who chooses to operate a massive object/weapon and endager countless PEOPLE?(no offense Dom, just using our friendly four legged friends as an example :) )

The following taken from Utah's DMV site:

*A 48-hour jail sentence
*Community service
*A series of fines starting at $700 plus court costs and a charge for the victim's restitution fund
*The suspension of your driver license for an additional three-month period or longer
*Treatment for alcohol or drug abuse, whether you have a problem or not
*The court may also require the installation of an "interlock" device on your car that checks your breath for alcohol before the ignition will operate.

WTF?

damn those are not even a deterent to keep someone from driving drunk... need harsher treatment I think...

One of the guys at my work was caught driving drunk he was only .09 but he would not submit to a breathalizer test so they took his license away for a whole year... now we all have to drive him around at work... and he takes the bus home to and from work every day... I think if you get caught it should be at least a year before you get your license back... and the heavy fines to go along with it...

I hear that... Did he get arrested for refusing to take the test? That's what seems to usually happen, as i am reading in my random research online.

There really needs to be far harsher punishments to deter such a destructive action.

to be issued a drivers license you have to willingly submit to testing when asked by an officer. If you don't then you violate the agreement and your driving privlidges are revoked.

So if he refused to test, how do you know he was .09?

At any rate, thats crazy man. I'm glad nobody innocent got seriously hurt

Go ahead Party hard, but when it is time to leave if you are to drunk call a friend or a yellow cab. It is a hell of a lot cheaper than totaling your car, someone elses car and maybe even killing you or someone else. Even though it is rarely the drunk who gets killed it is usually a family driving home from somewhere. Drunk Drivers are total F*** Heads.
That sucks man at least no one was hurt.
