I also sell permits to privet owners for there oversize boats, trailer combinations, sheds. Anything over 8' 6" wide 14" height, 65" long combination.

If you sell these permits to private owners, do you work for the state? How much do you sell them for?

I just called the DMV. They seemed to say the same thing as Kris. Our normal registration covers us up to 12K combined. Then, if we want to pay for heavy weight, we pay the difference between 12k, and the amount we want. Two examples were to raise it to 20k, it would cost $82.00 more that we already paid. For 26,000 it would cost $137.50 additional. I asked it we then coudn't get a ticket even though we are heavyier than the mfg sugested weight, she said yes - no ticket (I'm suspicious about that)

Anyway - this sucks, but there is a way to make it leagal.

Sounds like a new version of the speed trap...only now it's the fat trap! I think I'll take my chances... I've been pulled over by bored cops plenty of times over the years... never heard of this one. One cop even called 'em "Rocky Mountian Freight Trains" in a very disgusted manner. I walked away ticketless every time...course I had to listen to one guy cry about his ex-wife for two hours.:ugh:

They should tell you this when you buy a trailer and register it . My budy just bought a toy hauler that weighs in at 16500# empty , and the dealer never said a word about it.

True they should but, they don't all they care about is getting there $$$. You wouldn't believe how many people tell us the dealer never told them anything. :D

I currently have a 25' fifth wheel. I pulled tandem form utah county to moab. I had my crawler on a trailer and did have some sway over 70 mph. I thinkI may have had too much tongue weight when I loaded it.
PS the 5th wheel is for sale - moving out of country

There are a number of regulations like this. A number of states limit the load an 18 wheeler can carry based on the width of the tire. There are tires out there of certain dimensions and if you calculate the load the law allows (based on the sidewall width markings), the 'legal' load is greater than the Tire Mfg max load.

Dumb rules to be sure, but ever so slowly, the states are beginning to realize this and are making changes. However, it takes forever to get changes like this on the books.

wow this is good info.i always thought that you couldn't double pull unless u were using a fifth wheel. so i could actually hook my tent trailer to my jeep and the flat tow the jeep behind my truck and be legal?
