Crawler Gears
Pros:
-Quick, easy and cheap
-You keep your stock driveline lengths
-You don't have to modify your floor
Cons:
-Dead spot between low range and high range
-Lower overall cralw ratio, especially if you have cralwer gears in the second case
-Less gearing options

Dual Cases
Pros:
-More gearing options
-Lower overall crawl ratio
Cons:
-You have to change your driveline lenghts
-You have to cut another hole in the floor
-Costs more-you need another transfer case

Dual Cases are always the preferred option unless you can't afford it.

adding to above...

Crawler gears
pros:
-better gas mileage
Cons:
-rear driveline more vulnerable.
-front driveshaft angle can be an issue with lift (there are ways to address this)

Duals
Pros:
-best choice for driveline location(out of the rocks) and angle
Cons:
-increased drivetrain slop

i have duals and i love them with all the options for gearing. i've always thought about using just a gear set some day for the reasoning that it will cut down on a few pounds and i like the gas mileage thing too.

How much difference in mileage does the few extra pound really make? Or is it because there is more stuff turning in the gear oil?

I have 4.7 gears and just one case, and I really like it 98.3% of the time. 1.7% of the time I find them too low and wish I had stock gears to use. Most often it is in reverse.

i couldnt imagine the weight being enough to affect the gas mileage. the weight thing is for performance reasons. not a big difference but when you are trying to go ultra light a lot of 15 pounds here and 10 pounds there add up and make a huge difference. yeah less things to turn will save gas. extra case introduces more parts that need turning but im sure its not a big difference.

I have 5.7 gears in my case and I loved it but I still found my self wanting lower gears. So I added a second case and I really like this set up. The only thing I haven't liked about running duel cases is that I need to learn how to drive with them. I am not used to my gears being so low and find my self using the skinny peddle and low low a little to much. Sense putting my duels in a have broke 2 drive lines 1 long field and granaded my clutch. but all in all I liked starting out with just a gear set.

I have 4.7's and I wish I would have gone with duals. If I could do it again I would have gone with the duals then added 4.7's in the rear case--which I might do soon :D

I vote that if it is a rock only rig the 4.7's are probably best. If you see a lot of mild trail time, snow wheelin and sand the stock low is REALLY nice to have so go with duals...

I would guess 1-2 mpg. Consider the difference in mileage between 2wd vs 4wd trucks. Duals are along the same lines of increasing friction.

For reference every 100lbs ~ 2% mpg loss. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.shtml The bigger impact is the increased friction.

I can't say what the exact impact was on my setup cuz I have a lot of other factors affecting mpg and I didn't keep track of what difference duals made.

Rot box hit the nail on the head for what type of wheelin the stock gears are good for. I use 2wd low quite a bit as well.

Love the duals I rock 2lo all the time.... On trails like hells revenge, poisen spider, and alot of pritchett. Its nice to have the ease of turning with the 2lo. Then, when you come to an obstacle, you can just pop it in 4wd and crawl the obstacle. then 2 low to the next one!!!

If you are rockin 35's, 5.29s should be in there, regardless of what your t-case has. The lower you can go, the better.

Agreed. Matching your axle gears to your tire size should be the first thing you do regardless. After that match your low range to your offroad environment.

Trail only rigs typically don't need lower axle gears but in a Toyota 4cyl truck with big tires on the street the difference is night and day! :D

one other cool thing about the duals, is that when you are in low, low (low range in the splitter) you are also multiplying your torque. my 2nd gear in low & my 4th gear in low, low are similar ratios but 4th in low low has alot more torque.

Thats not possible. equal ratios = equal torque multiplication

yeah, your right. Im high!
(I should have done my math)
my 2nd in low 53 to 1 my 4th in low doubled 68 to 1
they feel like the same ratio, but 4th is lower = more torque
