Eagle Mountain Fire

Man, that sucks. I was just thinking about that myself. My rig is torn apart, and it'd be my primary escape/end of the world/zombie/emergency vehicle. It would suck to have it torn apart when you needed it most.

Kind of sad but at this point I'd probably grab the Mini-van (highest value vehicle and I don't need four wheel drive to get out.)

The fire is still moving south, my cell phone doesn't like the overcast light so pictures are bad. I'm still outside the evacuation zone so here's hoping things work out.

View from the field behind my house.

I have two spare beds and lots of room for sleeping bags if anyone needs a place to crash tonight.

Its crazy to see how much the valley has filled up with smoke. on our way back from dinner though we could see the draper area which we couldn't see when we went to dinner, so hopefully the smoke is slowing down, hope nothing happens to anyones houses.

glad you didn't have to evacuate Scott. I thought you'd be spending the night at the high school for sure.

I got evacuated a few years back when we had a fire to the South. I've had a bunch of people offer a place if I need it but I don't think I will. I heard they cut a firebreak to the west of my development so that should help if it makes it this far. When we had the fire in the past it usually moved fast enough and burned close to the ground so something like a road would stop the fire. There's a spot up the hill where the access road does a circle around some power poles and the fire never made it inside the circle because there just isn't enough fuel up high enough catch the inner circle on fire (unless the wind really goes crazy). I guess time will tell if I get a knock on the door, I have some stuff packed just in case but I'm thinking conditions will keep it west of me.

My wife's friend's little sister was supposed to close on a house today that was in the evacuation zone.

well i dont know if things have changed but the last fire they were talking about banning shooting and decided they could not do it because of the constitution and the right to bare arms but there needs to be a temp ban for sure this is just getting crazy the news said no charges were going to be filed against the shooters but they could be open for cival law suits has any of the evac'd ppl been told when they can go home yet

There was legislature passed in 2008 that says nobody can ban shooting on BLM land. The Governor has thought about calling an emergency session to potential overturn this and instate a ban, but it was pretty obvious he didn't want to do that. Instead, he basically told people to use common sense and stop shooting around dry grass.

We were evacuated in Eagle Mountain yesterday and returned home this morning. It is really quite amazing to see how little smoke there is today. There are still a few communities under mandatory evac, but it's only about 600 homes now. Here's the new official website to track updates (FEMA now has incident command).

So this fire... was not the first there have been three other fires out here. The thing that blows my mind is that the news and the radio stations all have talked about the danger of the dry grass. Another thing is the fact that we as a a state on on target to set one the record setting dry months. The last one was in 1994. I would dare to bet that there were a tons of fires like these that happened in that year as well. Just think soon they might try to set a ban on lightning soon.;)

Hope the comment above does not offend.I just like to keep it light. Also just wanted to let you know that most of the land where the fire was is privately owned. If you shoot or play out on the west side of the lake, you might have seen an old man driving a white chevy pickup all over. he OWNS the land but leaves it open to the public so people can enjoy it. he often times will ask you to pick up the trash (or crap) that you shoot as well as to pick up brass. He is a nice old guy who wants people who like to go out there to be respectful of the land and be responsible for their actions. The blm helps him take care of it.

Really? It was BLM land on the last map I checked... and some trust land mixed in.

Any links to said legislation? The BLM can and has banned giant areas from shooting, the Five Mile Pass (5MPRA) for example is all off limits to shooting and its arguably a better location for target practice. SITLA, the FS, NPS and others each have managed their own target-shooting bans in various places throughout the state.
