Brett, I've got a CB here you can have, if you've got time to install it before then.

I have to bow out, have a meeting with a contractor at 10 on Saturday.

No snow on the way, so it looks like there will be a blue eXcursion in the group. No CB though...anyone in the group have 2M?

If this wasn't the day of my wife's B day party I would rock the Subaru... but alas I don't think she would be happy if I skipped that :(

I might bring my honda civic.

Is this a legit Idea? Getting 30mpg in the Hyundai would be a LOT sweeter than the 11mpg in the truck!
I have never been on this trail.. Can cars make it?
Also, is this a round trip, or is it going to be one way, up to wendover and back via i-80?

IMO... Yes. But...

Honestly, I don't think you'd have a problem driving the whole route in a Hyundai, but the organizers have specified a 4wd as required equipment for the run. I'd probably take the truck just for that reason alone. Especially considering it is winter and there has been some snow out that way recently. Otherwise, I'd probably end up being "that guy", the one who shows up in the chit box to save a few bucks in gas and ends up getting stuck and slowing the group down.

These are just my opinions and not actually relevant to anything :D.

You can take a car along this as it is a maintained, graded dirt road. It usually has some sections of pretty rough washboard and can get muddy and rutted when wet. If you do decide to bring a car (or really any vehicle, but mainly I'll direct this to cars) running street tires, low ground clearance ect. there is a greater possibility of getting a flat tire, damaging your suspension and/or your undercarriage. As stated in the opening post, we require vehicles with 4WD. Generally when we say that we are talking SUV's and trucks, but for this trip we'll accept cars with 4WD and decent ground clearance such as a Subaru or Toyota Rav4. If you do decide to show up with a 2WD car, thats your choice. We won't necessarily turn you away as this is an "open" event and a public road, but we would strongly recommend bringing something else.

Also, is this a round trip, or is it going to be one way, up to wendover and back via i-80?

One way. We'll leave from Five Mile and come back from Wendover via I-80 (or however you want).

Are we talking better or worse than the main trail up AF canyon- before the switchbacks?

Just as a note my subaru has 2 inches of lift and is not running street tires ;)

Awesome. Lifted Suby's are sweet.

Different. Generally speaking its better, but you're also not humming along the road up North Fork at 40mph or better (usually) and its not ~130 miles long.

Fwiw we ran the PET from SLC to S. Lake Tahoe a year or so ago. One of our participants (RME'er that rhymes with RhettXJ) decided rather than take his XJ he would take his Rav4 rather than his Jeep. After all the Jeep needed new tires before he would feel comfortable and the Rav4 had nice new tires. I say had because he destroyed all 4 tires on the trip. Its not a comfortable place for car tires and low clearance vehicles, particularly in the winter when the roads can get muddy and the rocks are every present. My 2 cents.

Long story short I'm out you guy's :(

Have a great time, take lots of pics and be safe. Love the idea of EU quarterly trail rides--hopefully I can make the next one.
