I have shackles on my YJ. I don't mind them, except the faggot who owned my Jeep before me tightened them so tight the ride used to be terrible (until I fixed it)
Approach angle, yes does suck, but they are tough and I haven't had any problems with them. I think if you're only concern is approach angle to go and get a shackle reversal (icky ) which is one of my future additions.
Departure angle I haven't had any problems, I come down onto my leaf springs before I come down on the shackle. I've got more chalk on my leaf springs than anything else.
About Coils or Coilovers for competition... Not necessarily. If you have a leaf spring rig set up correctly, that thing will perform awesome!
Chris Durham used to have an old Jeepster (I think) He was a huge Competitor and it got him far, it was set up well... Until he destroyed it.
My brother has a CJ that is now part YJ, he used stock YJ springs and mixed and up the packs a little bit. He fits 37's just fine and that thing outflexes my brother's Land Rover D90 and his is made for the coil to disconnect from the top mount and keep dropping. So I think setup is where it is at for your suspension, not on what the suspension is.
