Extened Shackes

I have shackles on my YJ. I don't mind them, except the faggot who owned my Jeep before me tightened them so tight the ride used to be terrible (until I fixed it)

Approach angle, yes does suck, but they are tough and I haven't had any problems with them. I think if you're only concern is approach angle to go and get a shackle reversal (icky :D ) which is one of my future additions.

Departure angle I haven't had any problems, I come down onto my leaf springs before I come down on the shackle. I've got more chalk on my leaf springs than anything else.

About Coils or Coilovers for competition... Not necessarily. If you have a leaf spring rig set up correctly, that thing will perform awesome!

Chris Durham used to have an old Jeepster (I think) He was a huge Competitor and it got him far, it was set up well... Until he destroyed it.

My brother has a CJ that is now part YJ, he used stock YJ springs and mixed and up the packs a little bit. He fits 37's just fine and that thing outflexes my brother's Land Rover D90 and his is made for the coil to disconnect from the top mount and keep dropping. So I think setup is where it is at for your suspension, not on what the suspension is. :)

Actually, they do. If you buy extended shackles, let's say 1.5" lift, the shackles themselves are 3" longer than stock shackles. If your jeep only lifts 1.5", where'd the other 1.5" go? It took me a long time to realize, but they actually do decrease approach/departure angles.

if you don't understand the lift concept of shackles, think of it this way.
if you put a 3" extended shackle on the front of your jeep, it lifts it 1.5" instead of 3" because it is only one half of the spring. if you were to extend the fron shackles " and lower the rear hanger 3" you would get a 3" lift. hope i made that simple enough. you guys probably already know what i mean.

I guess I was wrong about the whole extended shackle thing. I mean everybody is allowed to run what they want, right? and if it works for them then good.

I had no idea that extended shackles did so much for a rig, such as leverage, more flex, and also to keep the leafs from hitting the frame.

To me them are pretty good reasons to run extended shackles, and I have seen some pretty wicked leaf set-ups. But I still prefer the coils, atleast on the front. xj style.;)

oops, I guess it does reduce departure angle. Not by much though. Don't worry, I understand how they work, no need for an explanation.

I think it's been established that longer shackles do in fact hurt the approach and departure angles..But I would much rather lengthen my shackles then add new leaf packs with more arch and hurt my flex factor..Like some of the other guys posted you can adjust your driving to the longer shackles.. If you built them youself and reinforce the hangers you can always knock the sh_t out of them on the rocks..It works for me:D.. There are obviously other methods of getting the job done but this way has proven itself for a verryy long time now....
