It's that time of year!!

We left Grand Junction and headed to a favorite road, Kebler Pass. The colors up on Kebler were odd, some trees were still very green, others were barren... I've heard that a lot of rain before Fall will make the color change pretty pathetic. From what I saw, there were still some good colors, but they were more sporadic in some locations than usual.

After Kebler Pass, we drove thru Crested Butte and then headed up towards Taylor Reservoir and the start of Tincup Pass. The town of Tincup was pretty neat, looks like most folks that live in town use the homes as a Summer vacation place... pretty sure Winters are brutal up there! The trail up Tincup Pass was pretty rocky and challenging in a few places, we aired the tires down to the high-teens and started the climb. Low range was used and on a couple optional lines, both lockers were engaged and we even managed to get tires of the ground a couple times.

Mirror Lake... not much of a reflection today!

We stayed the night in Salida, CO. The next morning we headed up to the Old Monarch Pass, which had some amazing colors and trees that were currently dropping leaves!

From there we headed up Waunita Pass, then over Cumberland Pass... with ever better colors!

We headed back thru Crested Butte for lunch and found a herd of Elk, safe in a farmers field outside of town! Looked like a good sized Bull leading the herd.

After lunch we headed towards the infamous Schofield Pass! This is a sketchy trail, several folks have been killed attempting the drive. The trail is very narrow and steep in places and there is no room for mistakes.

We didn't get many pics of the most sketchy parts, there were a few points where we simply didn't have the room to open the doors! There were a few spots with rocks on the road that you had to drive around and get pretty far off-camber. Eventually the trail got more mild and we made it to the Crystal Mill. It's the most photographed structure in CO for a good reason, it's simply amazing... so I spent some time getting different shots and playing with the camera.

From there we came down into Marble, CO and caught the pavement... for several miles over McClure Pass (where there was fresh snow!), then turned back onto dirt and picked up the road over Buzzard Divide.

And that was the end of our Fall Colors Tour for the year! I think we ended up with just over 500 miles in 2 days and about half of those were in the dirt... not a bad way to spend a weekend! Hope you enjoyed the pics. :)

Thank you Greg. Your fall color tours are my favorite trip reports.

LT.

Hey LT! It's become one trip that I look forward to year after year... it's really become something for us. Thanks for the compliments!

Great pictures Greg! A forum I belong to (www.thecj2apage.com) for Flat Fender Jeeps takes a trip up in that area every year. I have that trip on my bucket list.
Here's a link to their thread on the trip this year. Photos, videos and such start at the bottom of page 14.

Very cool, you should do your best to make it out next year! There are tons of other trails in the area and it's very scenic... I'm sure you'd love it! And I bet your Flatty will fit on the trail better than our big Land Cruiser. :)

Those pics are great, lots of Flat Fenders! Funny how we used the exact same title....
