Wow, this makes it better

"The government does plan to sweeten the deal. Twenty miles of dirt roads in the area will finally get pavement this spring at a cost of $7 million."

Not understanding how losing roads to pavement is a 'sweetener'

The new pricing is up there? Maybe they ought to look at why its so expensive to manage. How can it be cheaper to go boating?

they should keep the dirt road, then they could leave price's like they are. 7 million goes a long way for reducing fees. you are going out to play in the dirt and sand any way. another senseless use of taxpayer money......

No kidding. In the real world, if the costs surpass the inflow costs must be cut. In government if the costs surpass the inflow, taxes/fees must be raised. And getting rid of the one day pass????? WTF are they thinking?? I'm sure no one EVER just goes down for a Saturday. If they are going to raise the fees they should do it for those who camp in the campgrounds. When I go out in January and camp with the scouts at sand mountain I'm pretty sure that we don't use $50 worth of services from 6pm to 10am. What a joke.

I dont like that they are considering getting rid of the day passes and I could care less if they pave the roads, Most of the people that frequent the dunes have an off road vehicle or a truck to tow their stuff.

I haven't been to the dunes yet, but I have a pet theory I've been working on for the last few years. BLM and other agencies raising fees for popular areas, will only make folks NOT pay whenever they feel tehy can get away with it, OR, send them to other areas, not necessarily legal to ride. That in turn, gives the greenies more ammo against us. In turn, I also feel that some in government would like to shut down or overprice camping to a point that it becomes too expensive. And people quit. The theory here is that those of us that have the desire or ability to take care of ourselves OFF the government dole, will be FORCED to live as the government wants us to. Pet theory.

Sent an email to the director. Said that I will not be spending $25 for a one day outing there anymore. A 300% increase is ridiculous. I also suggested they SERIOUSLY consider not spending $7 mil on paving roads, but use it for funding Little Sahara and keeping the costs down.

At the very least there needs to still be a day use option. I think they under estimate the amount of people that only stay for one day. Actually, I am sure that they have the data and are just trying to stick it to us. Bastards. Why is it that no one in gov. can seem to manage a budget. If any of us were to mis-manage our budgets at our jobs this piss-poorly we would be out looking for new jobs.

To Whom it may concern:

I currently live in Hurricane Utah and I am an avid outdoor recreationist. I enjoy the outdoors in all forms. However my favorite thing is to speed around the dunes in my offroad rigs. I am blown away at the announcement that the Little Sahara Dunes area was to have an increase in user fees. In the real world when a business does not keep within it's budget there are cuts. You simply do not need the high speed rigs and sparkly new sand rails to efficently do your job. I am a member of an all volunteer Search and Rescue team, we get by with what is available in the budget and so should you. I believe that the dunes could be better managed and the user fees more wisely spent. If a small increase is neccassary so be it. To this this extreme is unreasonable and irresponsible. Not to mention doing away with a one day pass. Please turn this area over to the Utah State Parks they have a proven track record of managing recreation areas within budget constraints. I have serious concerns that many people will stop visiting this area because of the fee increase. This would only cause more fees for those that do visit. Last but not least. Why do you state that your going to pave roads at the cost of 7 million dollars. We come to the dunes to get out of the blacktop jungle and enjoy the sand dunes as they were meant to be! Sand and Dirt. Please consider my comments to come up with a better plan for Little Sahara Sand Dunes. Sincerely Casey Lofthouse

I never bother to pay when I go to the dunes anyway. During easter we always arrive at 4am so we don't have to wait in line for hours and you don't have to pay. :)

Are you serious??? That's like saying you go up AFC after or before hours so you don't have to pay. Just because there's not someone there 24/7 to take your money doesn't mean you don't need to pay (that's what the little envelopes are for). Seriously, it's actions like this that cause areas to be closed and/or fees to be raised.

I like your choice of vehicle and engine but your integrity is called into question. People going around the system just make it harder for the rest of us. Sadly you are not the only one. If you don't like the system there is a way to change it legally. Join in the effort by volunteering or donating to U4WDA, UFWDA, USA-ALL, BRC, or your local club. Become part of the solution not the problem. It would also be a good thing if people that go to the dunes clean up after themselves. If you bring it in, take it out. Don't say they don't have enough trash barrels.

This is what I sent to the BLM:

Attention Lisa Reid,
I do not understand the fee increase at Little Sahara. Has this been presented to the BLM Recreation RAC?
1. We do not need a black top road that costs $7 million dollars. We go there to get away from paved roads.
2. The increase in fees is much to large for most people to swallow and will drastically curtail usage. (Is this what you want?)
3. Day use should not be dropped.
4. Live within your budget. If you don't have the money do what the rest of us do, stop services, lay off people, and get volunteer groups to assist.
