Fender Flares - What's illegal?

Ok, I know there are a few new changes to the laws regarding 4x4's and flare coverage, lift, etc. The problem is, I always thought I was legal.

I went to Jiffy Lube( 33rd & Main) to get safety/IM for my 97 Rodeo. I have aftermarket rims and tires, the do stick outside the flares just about 1". I always understood that was the law.

So I pulled in and said what I needed. The guy told me the law now states you can't have anything sticking outside the flares. He claims the UHP is really cracking down on stations and how/what they are passing. Has anyone had this problem?

I have never had a problem getting passed, the truck is still IFS, running 3 5/8" backspaced wheels (Extreme Alloys) and 33x10.5 so it still appears relatively stock to most people.

I've had a bitch of a tmie trying to get my rigs passed safety for that reason. As I understand you must have the flare cover your entire width of the tire and you need to have something like a mud flap that covers to the axle centerline (rear only I believe) Jiffy lubs are really strict and according to them the cops have a few people that just go to these places and try to get their stuff passed illegaly (kinda lik sending a miner to buy beer at albertsons).

You can either find a shop that is a little less strict or fix the problem by different wheels or bigger flares. Good luck.

the problem of finding another shop it it is already in hp computor . you could always call hp . the number is 801-965-4889. if another shop over rides jiffy lube, hp could go after other shop. all shops are now tied to internet conm at hp office . if i can answer anymore questions pm me with a number and i would be glad to talk to you .

IMHO, your best bet is to find some wheels/tires that fit within your flares and get it inspected. What you after that is up to you. I've had the same experience with the flares/mudflaps. There's quite a few threads on RME about the same thing.

Exactly - UNLESS they didn't even take down your info. When I was trying to get my Rubicon to pass, I simply walked in and said will that pass, they said no, and I drove off. My mother was trying to get her car (Escort) to pass inspection (dang lift (frame too far off the ground) law!), and I told her to show the car to the guy and ask if it would pass BEFORE signing/filling out any paper work!! In CA once a car fails emissions, it is black flagged and will need emissions done every year for 5 years? I think then it goes back to every other - if the car is new enough to every other. So I'm real familiar with the ask first... :D

I agree. Get some stock wheels for cheap and put them on for inspections. Easiest way to do it.

That's what I did with my Rubicon! :D I borrowed a set from a friend. Then I installed 2" lift coils and bingo...

As far as I have known, it's always been cover the entire width, and upper 50% of the tire - not new this year. They may be cracking down, to where shops won't let the 1" go anymore when they used to...

Yes, this all makes no f-ing sense to me, you don't see cop's pulling over motorcycles with huge rear tires on the back, for mud flaps, or fender flairs for there front tire, this is just one more stupid Utah law so cops can pull you over and ask to search your jeep, yea you can search my jeep, if you have nothing better to do, I find Murry's red neck PD loves to pull you over, other than them every other PD in the Vally seem really cool about not pulling you over for stupid mud flaps/fenders, wow don't even get me started on the 3.2 BS law:mad2:

That doesn't get me as much as the big *ssed super duty's with 6" of lift, 38's and NO mudflaps/flares at all!

Luckily they guy told me out right before doing any paper work, so it isn't in the system yet. I knew that, and if he had put it in the system, I would simple buy garden edging and tap it into place.

I am just curious if it was new this year. I had always hear the rule as 1" outside the flares. Which, I have no problem with......I will try one other place then grab my stock rims with larger tires. I think they still fit under the flares.

I think the law is written to keep people safe from crap being thrown on them. That being said it sucks to see all those people with huge ass tires (the super duties on 38"s) and I'm getting hasseled for barely over stock tires on my dodge. I had to put mud flaps on the back to pass safety and its at STOCK height!!!!
