Getting back to the original post though. It used to be that your tires could stick out 1-2", but then when they re-wrote a bunch of the laws, they changed it. That change happened quite a few years ago though.

The law's read that way for at least the last 7 years or so.

Well even worse now....I went to another place that passed it on the flares..however they wouldn't pass the body lift.....oh, and they didn't tell me until after so I am in the system now as failed.

I know body lifts aren't liked by most. However, I have had it for a few years now.....this is the first year I have had a problem. It is a 3" body lift, and because it sits on the original mounts, it makes it 4" of lift total.

The problem I have is that a lot of modifictions have been done around the body lift. I raised the gas tank 4", raised the boulder bars, custom bumper, etc.

Hopefully I can get an exception from UHP for this, at least for 1 year then I can work on it over the summer.

Does anyone know how good the UHP is to work with on this type of stuff?

They are just enforcing the law. If you don't like the law, write your legislators. I don't think it's a totally unreasonable law.

What, you don't want another 10-page rant against mud-flap and fender flare laws thread?

Me neither.

Need to cover the tires, pure and simple. And remember that even if you get it passed by switching tires, doesn't mean you may not be ticketed down the road. I would think it would be easier just to add flares.

I don't mind the threads that much.

My biggest concern is that the law is only being enforced on people / vehicles that are closer to obeying the laws and the people with blatant modifications are just being passed up.

How is it that a 4 runner on 33's that barely stick out past the fenders (and that's probably the only illegal mod) gets the slap in the face when the guy with a full size pickup, 38"+ tires, tall stacked lift blocks (and other unsafe suspension hacks... I've even seen these rigs with FRONT lift blocks!), hacked in steering, and other seriously ill modifications get by with no problems?

The system is flawed and wrong, imo. There should be more focus on other dangerous, life threatening problems on vehicles other than some silly fender flairs that might kick a pebble up into my windsheild. But that already happens no matter what vehicle you are behind.

I know there are a ton in the 4wd and Quadratec catalogs. I bult some quick disconnect flaps for my CJ since the tires stick out way to far for a standard flap. They look silly but work like a charm and take 2 seconds to pull off.

Must admit there are alot of fullsize trucks that shouldn't be on the road.

I've been failed at one location and went to another with the remedy just cause I didn't like how strict they were. I still remedied the problem but took my business where I felt was treating me fair. I wouldn't worry so much about being flagged I'd worry about how to make it work. Still have your rig pass legitimatley but without taking it apart. I will do the tire swap thing this year. But I have never been sighted for tires sticking out. All my jeeps stick out on tires. I dont know what's the deal with body lift? I understand why but I find it hard to believe that the State wants everyone to ditch them? That's harsh. I actually want to ditch my body lift. Not just to get my rig to pass.

I wish I had pictures, but I was wondering how I was going to get my rig to pass when my tires stuck out 7'' past the body when only 6'' fender flares are something you can buy? I used the existing flare, drilled two holes at each end Installed a bolt, large washer, and nut fastener to sandwich wide plastic sheet to it. I went overboard just for fun and I made them cover the tires 3''. The rule the guys that hassled me was that If you try to extend your fenders it has to be with the same type of material. I called to some supplier and got a plastic sheet for $15 bucks. That was enough to make a set for my friend and myself and plenty of extra. Much cheaper than some bushwackers that wouldn't work.

The law is that 100% of the top of the tire must be covered and 50% of the rear tires must be covered. I went through the same thing every year and I work for a shop. Another way to take care of flaps a reciever style (thats what I use). Most shops will pass it with factory equipment because it lowers ride height and fit in the fender wells, and when you get home and change them out and get pulled over they can deny any claims that they willingly passed something illegal. Another thing to watch out for is tint. 50% on front side windows and the third brake light cannot be covered.

See thats another thing i'm sketchy about is the 3rd brake light, i see TONS of jeeps out there with after market tirecarries and no 3rd breke light.

I don't think you are required to keep it on there. Or, those that inspect don't even pay attention to it not being there.... Maybe they assume that it's in the window on Jeep's, like other cars? The one on my Acura was burned out during it's last test, and it passed - even at Jiffy Lube.
