I have a Miller 211 autoset also. I love it. I've had a Hobart 180 autoset and a miller 120 both were great but the flexiblity of being able to use both 110v and 220v is unparalled. Say you're running 220 in the shop, then you need to weld something in the driveway and your extension cord won't reach...well switch the plug and go after it. I hardly ever use the autoset feature but its nice to learn with.

Oh sweet. The only reason I didn't want to think about Humphries was I didn't want to have to drive all the way to Richfield. I'll have to check them out the beginning of next week.

If you have never welded before, and don't want to take a class, there is a handful of good videos on YouTube that can help get you started. Actually, in Pirate4x4, there is some sections that Jesse did on PirateTV that were pretty good for MIG. I made my buddy watch them before I let him use my Hobart again and his welding was greatly improved. It helped him so much that he was actually able to repair one of his exhaust manifolds properly. I was impressed. There was two sections, one in two different videos. Definitely check it out.

I remember when I got my first welder, I bought it shortly after a good friend (nice guy, but a bit large) blew one corner of the passenger seat rail through the tub of my first YJ. First thing I did was make a quarter sized piece of sheet metal disappear into the ether. Whoops! That was enlightening. I suggest watching the videos first, don't be like me. Heh!

Even though they are inexpensive, the auto darkening hoods at Harbor Freight are pretty decent. I borrowed a friend's really expensive model, and loved it, until I found out it was almost as much as I paid for my Hobart MIG. Eeek! I bought the harbor freight model, and while the window is a lot smaller, it's been every bit as good as his, if a tad less comfortable. The difference is that he wears his a few hours a day, pretty often. I only wear mine a few hours a month.

for good reference air gas said you only have to test your tanks every 10 years and the tanks last forever. I found a place on ebay that sells 65 cf tanks for 75 buck well worth it imo to buy not rent

There are certain restrictions with tanks if you buy any from Ebay, KSL, Yard sale ect. make sure they are blank tanks with no company stamps on them. for example Linde, US welding, Humphries, Whitmore, Praxair, WOCO. because these are usually tracked bottles and may be stolen. and can only be exchanged, and transported through that company, and only if you have a bill of sale on these bottles. If you buy new, find a company that has been in the same location for a while and isn't going to leave you gas less.

As far as testing bottles Acetylene must be tested ever 5 years and all other every 10 years. also bottles do Not last for ever. some times they do not pass the tests and are disposed by the testing facility. every now and then i get some from the 1930's that have tests stamps ever ten years.

Don't get a gas bottle, they're too expensive. Just get the cheapest 120v welder you can find, run flux core, and hate it :)
