and keep your RPMs up when pulling a grade. Don't be afraid of 2800 RPM, that's where it will pull the hardest.
yeah, wind it up when you are approaching a hill. High rpm's are not bad for short periods, when you are pulling a hill even a large hill you are not going to run 2800 for hours, maybe 10 minutes at a time.

I run my truck at 3000 in 5th(with camper and jeep or atv's in tow) here and there doesn't hurt. Just watch your EGT's.

Maybe invest in guages first to see what the truck is doing when you are getting on it while towing. It may suprise you.

I haven't got to pull a hill yet with a load, but I'll keep that in mind when I do. I used to 'get a run' with my old tow truck (UD---200 hp Nissan diesel) and my TBI Subs. (can get 'interesting' in Spanish Fork Canyon)

I want a Pyrometer and trans temp gauge. Boost would be kinda interesting too.

shhh, don't tell the interweb experts, keep it under your hat.:D

I usually got a solid 15mpg out of mine, wether I had my buggy behind me or I was cruising the freeway empty, sometimes going lower if I had a strong head wind. I was planning on intake, exhaust, and a mild chip if I had kept mine.

I agree, anyone that claims 20+ while towing (especially in a PS) are full of it. It won't happen.

I think getting the RPMs up was key in a diesel. It was really weird at first too, I felt like I was gonna blow up the motor, till you get used to it.

I voted for mild upgrades.

the sites there talking about helps out alot (you probably already know that)

I used to belong to thedieselstop.com but i've been going over to oilburners.net. They seem to have more of what i need in there 6.9L forum.

With my 85 F250 6.9L no turbo empty i can get 16 mg. When i went to Kansas to pic up my dad's Jeepster i got about 12-13 mg. I was really suprised. But that was between 55-65 MPH.

I'm not convinced you need to get a "run" at the hill, just downshift while maintaining your speed before you start the grade.

I should probably stick mine in 5th earlier than I do now. I'll try that next time I go somewhere.

I put 295 Nitto's on my dodge. I think I could feel a slight loss in power. The tires changed the speedometer by 3 mph over stock. I figured I could travel faster at the same rpm, and get better mileage. I think it works empty, but not pulling. From what I've read, the trick would be to get taller tires, but not wider. I think I can tell my braking got a little worse also with the bigger tires also.
I haven't driven it enough to figure it all out.

I find that strange that you are having such a noticable lack of power and poor mileage. My dad has a 2003 PSD 7.3L w/ Auto trans and that thing is a tank. Everytime I've used it, I don't notice the trailer/jeep behind me. I love towing with that truck. It's a big longbed quad cab and it gets much better mileage under tow than that.

I'm wondering if some simple maintenance can bring that truck back up par. Check fuel pressures, electronics, turbo leaks, etc...

.............{actually, it did pretty well, just not as well as it's built up to be on the interweb}

Referenced from my first post. Apparently I've not put enough irony into my original post.

I've gotten a few messages from people thinking that I'm totally unhappy with my truck. It actually does pretty well, but is having a hard time keeping up with all the statements on the internet (honestly, what could? It's not a Kenworth wrapped in a pickup body.) {Actually, I'm just making fun of all the guys that claim they're getting 26 mpg towing 16,000 lbs up Parleys while doing 85 with their load of 8 horses, 9 people in the cab, a full load of fuel, and tow-strapping an ailing 80,000 lb big truck to the summit. It tows OK, but could probably use a few mods to be 'bitchin'. It'll SPANK my TBI Sub.}. It's light years ahead of what it replaced as far as going up a hill and having power to tow at whatever speed I'd like it to and get's at least as good of mileage with a trailer on than the other rig just running down the road. Tough to b!tch about that.

I set the cruise at 68 and it pretty much stayed there without worry (unless I had to slow for traffic or whatever). I DID notice the Jeep behind me (nothing like I would in a half ton or lesser vehicle), DID NOT get 29 mpg towing, and the engine DID have to work a little to keep it's speed going up overpass hills.

As mentioned, I think there's still some room for improvement (isn't there always?) with some minor mods and probably some minor maintenance. It's not unfathomable that I could be losing boost pressure or something and could get even better performance out of it.

I was actually more excited the YJ got out of the garage and onto the trailer to get a few things done. :D The towing with the 'new' truck was just kind of a bonus. The YJ got WAY more looks on the trailer than the truck did. :D

shifting to keep in the powerband is always good. sometimes on long pulls it is easy to miss judge when to down shift (I do it sometimes too  ).

So... Enough about the truck. What did you get done on your YJ? What's left?

Seat mounting points and a couple other things. Lots left. But it could drive under it's own power and in reasonable comfort by the end of next Sat.? (I'll still need some kind of traction bar for the rear to take it out. An exhaust could be kinda handy also.)

You gonna do the exhaust yourself, or take it to one of the several buggy-friendly shops? Where did you take it?

If I can get the Suburban head pipe to work, I'll probably do it myself. (it's close, but needs some massaging.) Otherwise I need to gather some more $$$ to get it done. I've got a 'performance Y' pipe from Flowmaster kicking around somewhere that might help if I did try to do it myself. Have you ever run exhaust tube through your bender? I should be a pretty straight shot once I get past the 'Y' and the muffler.

Russ helped me with the bends under the seat (he's WAY expensive, though;)). I liked how he did his purple one and started chatting with him about it. We've still got one more piece to go (the front one with the challenging bends) and then mount the seats. Carl gave me a backup plan if that falls through, though.

hey Mark, I don't want to make you any more... lukewarm about that PSD, BUT... on the way to CA with a nearly 10k load (8020lb M715 w/Rock's and 46's) and 2 people in the truck, my good pal Tom's Duramax got a no-sh*t 17mpg average all the way there. He was somewhat incredulous, and triple checked, against the odomete and fuel use, not using the onboard computer.

Any better mileage than a big block is just fine with me. I'll be looking for a Cummins soon for the dually.

unloaded on the freeway my ctd gets between 22-25 mpg. Loaded probably closer to 14-16....but I tend to tow faster than most people.

Also, I put a little larger tire on it so my speedo is off by 7%--so I go 7% faster than what I would have been originally. Kinda helps cruising at 80 a little easier.
