Its hard to add anything new to what has already been stated. You really cant go wrong with a 7.3. I have a 1996 crew cab shortbed. I have been a total weight of 21-22k pulling a 39 foot fifth wheel. Truck did great. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it did. The superduty has a few things the obs does not. They are not intercooled. Really not a big deal unless you plan on adding more fuel. When I was looking for a truck I wanted a 5.9 six speed cummins mega cab. I am so glad I went with the ford.

I went from a '96 Ford 7.3 auto std cab long bed to an '06 Dodge 5.9 6 speed manual quad cab short bed. The Ford was the better work truck and short hauler. The Dodge is the better commuter and long hauler.

OK, like said above, all is true....with that said I did just what you are talking about... If I were to do it again I would have dropped my ford at the shop that does the Cummins swap and be done with it, it would have been a lot less expensive(8 to 10 k for the swap) and I would have had the best of both worlds!! so I am not giving up my Cummins and 6 spd!! I am over 200k miles, when the dodge body, axles, suspension dies I will be looking for a Ford to do the swap.

Im sure some Cummins guy will post up how he never had had a problem in 600k miles, has never even changed the oil...AND gets 45 mpg pulling a train car down the freeway at 95 mph...

Well, of course the dodge is superior. Lol. I love my dodge trucks. Ford makes a good product also and has more cab room. I wont deny that. The joke about the Dodge trucks is that they have million mile drive trains and 100k mile trucks. Could be but, i have never seen a million mile powerstroke and i have personally seen two million mile dodges. It was not until 2010 when dodge finally had an interior that was on par with ford. The earlier versions could not hold a candle to ford.

I know there are lots of haters and i will admit i dont care for ford or chevy for that matter. But, i do own a ford and a gmc as well as dodge. Some makes are better suited for certin jobs. In your case the ford may be the better option due to the interior room and familiarty.

I hope that helps without sounding like a ford hater and dodge lover.

My brother has a 97 cummins, auto trani. He is right at 500k miles. Motor runs like a champ. I think it's on trani number 5 now, and countless minor trani repairs.
If it can go 500k with the auto, I imagine 1mil wouldn't be a problem with the manual!
Every time there is a trani issue he swears he is going to buy a newer truck.. But then we fix it, and wait till the next time.. And round and round we go.

He claims 20 MPG towing large RV campers with his million miler. Sounds like bullshit to me and casts doubt on the whole article.

Agreed. The million mile cummins trucks i am familiar with have had issues. Head gaskets, injectors, fuel pumps, trannys, u joints, injection pumps, and one had the head rebuilt. But, the short blocks are all orginal built by cummins. But, I dont think a million miles is possible without some problems.

This is a timely thread as I'm going through this right now. Looked at a 2000 SuperDuty yesterday and going to look at a 98 Dodge 12 valve, and a Duramax tomorrow. I sold my half ton on Friday and need another truck now. If either of you guys that mentioned selling your Fords are serious and close ready to sell, please send me the info.

You are correct Cheston, I really don't want 38s on a tow rig. Heck, my buggy only sports 37s. Your truck would give it a complex.

I saw your ad 1adam12. I sold my extremely clean, low mileage, crew cab 97 PSD, for less than that about 9 years ago.Apparently the market has changed, and your truck is out of my price range.
