We traded our 2017 Ram 3500 in on a Grand Cherokee for the Mrs. back in mid June. We knew we would get top dollar for that truck because of the market shortages caused by the massive microchip supplier problems (one of them burnt to the ground). We also knew that replacing that truck meant paying way too much for a used truck, or ordering brand new and hoping it actually got produced this year.
On 6/27 I submitted my order. I didn't want another diesel. I also didn't want gadgets and doo-dads. There's also a rumor about my grandparent status going around, so I wanted a grandpa truck. I always loved the look of my 1997 Supercab Shortbed, so I got another one.
Model year 2022 production began on July 6th and seemed promising from reports I had read. I've never ordered a vehicle before, and was told it's NORMALLY 8-10 weeks, but this year might be double that.
Having ordered my new red wagon, I found a thread on Ford Truck Enthusiast forum where a guy had created a neat spreadsheet that pulled data from Ford's database and created a better idea of what was happening with each ordered truck.
Once your truck is assigned a VIN, you can be added to the spreadsheet. I got my VIN about 2 weeks later. My truck was scheduled to be built on 8/27 and was actually produced on 8/24, then shipped on 8/25. All of these details were updated on the spreadsheet automatically.
The truck arrived in Salt Lake City at the rail yard on 9/3. The dealer called me yesterday 9/9 and told me to come get my damn truck off his lot, then he sent me a few pics. We pick it up tomorrow.
All in all, it took 9 weeks from the time I ordered the truck to be ready for me to pick it up. Lots of guys aren't that lucky right now and they are still waiting for parts or chip modules to come in so their trucks can be finished. Mine isn't fancy at all, so it went to the head of the line.
