Gas VS Diesel what to look for.

Weighed at IFA today:

Front 3840
Rear 6680 (subtracting front from X total)
X total 10520
Trailer 11680
All 22120 (I will need to correct the post above) Some of the weights may not add up due to rounding to the nearest 20 each time.

Trailer is 24' deckover rated for 14,000#. Various loading arrangements pre-measured and calculated to find the best balance. Ended up with 1250 on the tongue. Also used EQ bars.

It towed really well, just heavy on the hills. Brakes were awesome!

Okay, fine: you win.
Naw, it's just a point of reference. I haven't fueled up yet; 7ish is probably optimistic.

Also, 50-55 is too fast for 2nd and too slow for 3rd/drive, at least with that load. It might be gear splitter time.

Edit: 6.8 mpg (at the pump)

Got 15ish towing the empty trailer (4500ish lbs) from Draper to Ogden, 16ish coming back to Midvale. 75 both ways.

Gas versus diesel. In most of the cases I read we're also dealing with a 1/2 ton versus a 3/4 to 1 ton. Hands down I'll take the 1 ton diesel when it comes to towing (or driving around town). Bigger brakes, stronger motor, stronger driveline. I bought an 05' Dooge 3500 SRW to haul my crawler all over the place. At the time we were making that trip from Connecticut to Moab. This was a non-stop trip, only stopping for fuel. I was averaging 360 miles per fill-up (34 gallon tank) but was stopping every time my buddy in his 2004.5 DRW hauling a XJ and TJ. Obviously I was averaging the better mileage, he was pushing the tank and I still had quite a bit left. Fuel mileage always depends on how the skinny pedal is used or abused. I came from using a gasser 2500 Chevy, hands down the fuel mileage is better. I'll take the truck that doesn't sweat the weight that is hanging off the hitch versus the truck that is pushing it limits. Eventually you will be paying for the wear on those gassers. I'll probably never venture back to gas or a 1/2 ton again.

The way it used to be

I now can testify the driveline of a diesel is unquestionably strong :D I still have the stock u-joints in the driveshafts  I can only wish for good fuel mileage now

Now in Floriduh, no rocks and just mud...I'll pass. The tow rig became the toy and I still drive it on the street :greg:
