Gear pattern check?

I picked up a rear Dana 60 that's already been built, including a set of new 5.13 gears. I don't know who installed the gears so I'd like to hear from the guys that have successfully setup ring & pinions as to how good the pattern looks. It looks fine to me and I've been involved in a few gear installations, but I'd like 'expert' option from the guys that know. Here's some pics-

This axle was build to be just about unbreakable... with a set of 40 spline shafts!   It also has a spool, Crane diff cover and disc brakes, in addition to the 5.13's. Width is 62" wide @ WMS. The 40 spline axles measure in at 1.708"!!

Here's some pics comparing the 40 spline to a 35 spline shaft. This axle will be going in the back of the Sami-Buggy.

Steel bearing caps?

Yep... someone spent a lot of money with Mark Williams. Not me... :greg:

Steel Replacement Main Cap with bolts. One of the most common causes of rear end component failure can be traced to the stock rear end caps. To cure this problem MW makes a replacement cap from billet steel with an increased cross section and heat treated hardware.

Pinion looks like it might be slightly away, but I'd run it. It looks better than if not close to the same patterns I settled with on a couple of mine.

I always wondered if it was worth it to run 40 spline, especially if you had not invested in the 35 spline stuff yet? Any cons to that?

That's my opinion too, pinion too far away. If it were me setting up those gears, I would move the pinion closer rather than running it like that. But if you do want to run it that far out, check the pattern in a couple of other places on the gear - maybe check like three total pattern areas to make sure all three are that far away and none that are even further.

With the pinion that far away (it's riding on the face, meaning there probably aren't any shims on the pinion at all), I would also be concerned with backlash.

The more I think about it, I think I would definately move it in more.... You have it out and semi apart already....... With it like that, the r&p will definately be your weak link. If you set them up right, they may not.

EDIT:
FWIW I like to see the contact pattern centered, between face and flank - not toe and heel....

For a better visual, this is what is meant by "pinion to far away".

The pinion is riding more on the edge of the tooth than the root. Strongest pattern is right in between the two.

With that said, It looks like it's right on the edge and not past it. I'd run it. :)

I want to see any of you who think that pattern is too far out set it up any better!!! Looks perfect to me.... but what do I know??? If you think that will deflect and break because it's not deep enough?

I'm one that think it's way too high on the face, and could use another 5 or even 10 worth of shims to get the pinion in deeper.

Here is just one of mine.... The one tooth is partially ground to clear the x pin, because I refuse to grind the cross pin or install notched ones - very weak way of doing it! you can also see that I check the pattern in several places, not just one. I like to check at least three places, even spaced, around the ring.

Maybe you do not know who Andy is. He hung out on RME quite a bit before you found the place and has been missing for a while. He says it is good it is good. He knows.

I said in my first post that I would definately run it and am currently running similar patterns in one of my rig. I was just adding some extra tech to the thread. :D
