genuine gears

how is the quality of genuine gears? Yukon gears? What is the best brand to use? These are for a 30, 35, in a yj.

Genuine's are junk - don't waste your time, or money.

I pretty much use Yukon and Spicer exclusively. The only time I use others are when the customer brings them in. I have had customers bring in their own Genuine Gears, and they setup lousy. The contact patterns just don't get any better than decent, even after fudging with them for hours. Yukon and Spicer are very consistent and outstanding patterns are very easy to acquire. Since Yukon's are so inexpensive, 99% of the time it's what I use... Even in my personal rigs.... PM me for pricing if interested...

Genuine Gear is junk. There are lots of good gear brands. Yukon, Spicer, Motive, and Richmond all come to mind. I've used Yukon and Motive with good results.

You can get a great pattern out of genuine gears if you know what your doing and have the patients. But they are going to be alot harder to set up than some other brands. They do have a life time warreny though. I think once they are set up properly you will most like not have any issues with them.

So do Autozone's $9 u joints, but I won't run them in my rig. They just won't last near as long as a Spicer joint for $20. Who wants to work on their junk every weekend when a better quality item is about the same price, sometimes a little more and sometimes even a little less.

As for GG's lasting, naw.. I've heard about lots of them failing... It's just not worth it. Yeah, they will honor their warranty, so you'll be replacing them every season. Or you can get some Yukon's and never give it another thought.

Would you run GG's in your personal rig?

I know how to setup gears. I can usually get Yukon's setup in about 3 tries and about 30 minutes. No way I can do that with GG's... No, I don't use a pinion depth guage, I base my pinion depth completely on the contact pattern. It's just that even perfect, the GG's contact pattern is lowsy. You get a Yukon perfect and the contact pattern is also perfect, and it's easy to do.

I will admitt that the gg's are harder to set up but I can get a perfect pattern on 98% of all gg's and Iset up gears the same way you do. And I do actualy run them in my own rig (because they were the cheapest) but so far without problems. About a year in my 60's behind a smallblock with 39's and I wheel pretty hard. but iwont argue with you set up of a yukon or other gears is much easier. How long a gear set lasts is all in the set up and break in procedures.

4 wheel parts likes to pimp the genuine gears, but they're crap. I had them install some 4.56's and then made them fix it for free when they blew up on me twice! Finally I got fed up and instead of cashing in the warranty I went to Six States and they put in some Precisions - been running fine ever since. I'm sure setup has a lot to do with it, but the chances of GGs failing is pretty high. Here's a pic of the rear pinion I blew out while at Little Moab. You just don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere because of cheap junk.

WOW! Nice metallurgy on that pinion gear.

With GG it is not just getting a good pattern, it is getting a pattern that is consistant around the whole gear....I can't tell you how many times I have got a good pattern in one spot on the gear, only to check it 90/180 deg around and it is crap....GG tolerances are junk along with their QC. I will not run them, or install them. Not worth the headache or p'd of customer/friend....For $20-30 more get the good stuff!!!! I don't know anyone outside of 4wparts that will install them, let alone warranty them....

Yep they suck.... Really bad ;)

For my money (and peace of mind) I'll stick with Yukon. You really do get what you pay for, and cheap R&P's are a prime example

Yeah I'm sure they give you all new bearings etc when the metal from their bad R and P goes though and chews them up also:rolleyes:

I've had that exact thing happen on a set of Genuines. I had to split the difference and let it go.

For me, time is money. And my time is a lot more valuable than sitting around for 2 hours trying to get a decent setup on a pair of crap gears, when I can put some Yukon's in and in about 20 minutes be done with it. I also don't have to worry about them failing later, or Yukon not warranteeing <is that a word?> later.

Exactly!! ...Why put all of that time and energy into a crappy pattern, or something that you 'have to live with' when there are much better gears out there, and for not much more $'s.

I was not trying to say that gg's were the best gears out there cause they are not. I was just saying that it is not impossible to get a good pattern. and I have not had a single problem wit hthe genuines in my rig. As a matter of fact I also had genuines in the old axles under my rig for at least 3 year and never had a problem with them either. The guy that has my old axle now blew up the detroit in it but the gears are still kickin.
