Getting Narrow

After yesterdays trail I guess I have to admit, I might be just a tad too wide. In my quest to narrow my stance, the cheepest way I can come up with is to change the offset on my wheels. There is only one real task that I'm a little unsure of. I run 15" wheels, on the D60 you have to grind part of the caliper to clear the wheel. My question is, has anyone ever ground down the entire caliper so that the caliper sits inside the wheel? my plan is to cut the centers out and offset them out 2-3" per side with an over all with reduction of 5-6".

Thoughts?

I have a set of 17" steel 8-lug beadlocks. They have 37" Trepadors wrapped around 'em right now. WAY easier than grinding calipers. (I hate grinding calipers)

Edit: grinding welds out to re-center wheels sucks also. It's time consuming, loud, messy, and a lot of other nasty adjectives. It's nothing you can't do, of course....I just would never do it again.

1) 37's are too small...
2) Money is a problem...
3) what the FF is a trepadors....

I really don't mind grindage, I just want to make sure there is enough meat there when I start grinding by the piston.

1) I'll bet my 37's measure just about as tall as your 38's.
2) Sell your existing tires/wheels for the same price as you buy mine for. :)
3) Trepadors rule. I'm wearing them in this pic:

OK, just measured....they sit at 36.25" tall right now. (I actually thought they were taller, but I guess I'm remembering when they were brand-new and unmounted)

Backspacing is 4.75" on the rears, and 5.25" fronts. They're set pretty much the maximum backspacing that will still clear the brakes. For some reason the rear disc calipers stick out farther than the front ones do, that's why the difference in backspacing.

PM sent....

Thanks, but I need more closer to 6-7".

Good luck with that. H1 wheels are the only ones I can think of with that much backspacing, and you'll need different hi-steer arms to go with those as well. Your 15"ers will never go in that far unless you change to 1/2 ton brakes.

Don't you have 10" wide rims, too? Plus the weld-on beadlocks? That adds a bunch of width also.

How wide are you now? For comparison, my old buggy with the full-width GM 60 was about 80" wide outside to outside with these wheels.

He is right. If you need that much back spacing you will need some hummer wheels, which of course mean 16.5 wheels, and new tires.... so those wont solve your problem anyway.

I'm already working on the high steering arms,
IF (whitch is why I posted this thread) I can grind down the caliper all the way (width wise) I will clear that,
Yes, 10 inchers.
My wheels will allow me to move them in 3-4 more inches and they are already 3" off set.

I'm 86" in the rear and should be 88" in the front.

This in much cheeper to do than buying different tires and wheels. If I had to, I would get some 40's or 42's.

H2 wheels are in that range as well. They're close to 6". I'll be curious to see if you can get the 15" to fit. From what I've read (somewhere on PBB), if you go more than about 4" backspacing you're really starting to grind a LOT off the D60 calipers.

ps,

I like to think "out of the box". Just because it Might not be able to be done dosen't mean it can't be done.

Just for reference, my front is 78"ish aired up, about 82" bulge to bulge when aired down. That is full width Ford 60, 8" rims w/ 3 5/8" bs, 38x12.50x15 sx's, but I am running 1/2ton brakes....
