This is what Im talking about. Kind of why I am shying away from Red Iguana. I see that being pretty Amerimexican food

I think Red Iguana is the only real "traditional" mexican restaurant in that they don't try to sell you all of the Americanized Mexican dishes (beef taco, smothered burrito etc). You don't go into a nice restaurant in non-tourist mexico and find "smothered chile verde burrito" lol. They dig deep into the culture and put together some stuff that I only remember seeing when I was working in Cancun and ventured into the city. Anyone can slather some chile verde onto a tortilla, but that couldn't be further from the work that goes into some of the mole's you find at RI.

So, if you want Americanized mexi, complete with tacos and "red sauce" or chile verde, then I recommend not checking out RI. If you want something more traditional and a little better, then check it out.

If you do go, check out the mole poblano or the puntas nortena (my mouth is watering just thinking about the puntas). If you want something more along the lines of what you can get everywhere else (only better, I think) try the Tacos Don Ramon or the Enchilada Suizas.

What did you call me???? lol

Im hoping to try a new place out tonight

Not you. Just the idea of great Mexican food in Utah. Every time I have gone to a "great Mexican food restaurant" in Utah I have left disapointed. My wife told me of all these great places to eat and yet, it seems like something was just missing. Of course when I took her out to eat at some fantastic Mexican food joint here in New Mexico she kinda turned up her nose at it saying it was too spicy or too hot. I think it is a regional kind of thing. She thought it was great in Utah and I thought the best food I have ever eaten came from New Mexico.

I like Casa Del Rey for the Chile Rellenos, the chips and salsa, and the great owner. He checks on every table, every time I've been there.

OK, Just got home from Casa Del Rey (had to finally give it a tray). Much better than La Frontera, Red Iguana is better still... and yet I would go to La Chaca if I wanted super good Mexican and I was in Salt Lake.

Exactly! Having lived in AZ,NM,UT,TX and CA we have tried many forms of american "mexican" food. Red Iguana by far has been one of the best. We truly miss this place.

For food on the cheap, El Paisa in WVC was pretty good. The molcajete dinner was awesome

There is some decent food in SF however the rest of NM has some of the WORST mexican food i've ever seen. Most of the mexican food restaurants here just produce substandard food and drown it in green or red sauce to mask the taste. They can have it.

I'm from NJ and don't like Mexican food..... the pizza here sux though

i'm no superfan, but stoneground wasn't too shabby

Too bad the rest of the menu sucks....

Honestly, La Hacendia has to have the most mediocre Mexican food I've ever had. I think it's funny how many people like it, I'm not a fan at all.

x2! The only other option we have is Fiesta Mexicana. Much better than La Hacienda but still not great. :-\

Its been a long time since I lived in NM, there were highlights that I'm sure are long gone. I lived in Albuquerque in the early/mid 80s. Favorite hole in the wall was Acapulco's on San Mateo near the base. Desert Rose was somewhere on the way to Rio Rancho before it became a HUGE city on its own. Is there still a place or two offering Navajo foods near Bosque Farms south of ABQ?

Here in Utah, as I said, anything with a "La" in front I will avoid. But loving this thread to hopefully find some good places to eat. Heat is OK, but I want flavor in there too.
