SALT LAKE CITY — I have been playing guitar for the past 12 years and my skills are mediocre at best. Did I say "skills"? That's probably going a little far. Maybe I should say, my abilities are embarrassing for playing for more than a decade.

While I don't play well, any glimmer of confidence I had has been shredded due to this video.

Tina is 14 years old and her teacher filmed this video of her shredding Van Halen's "Eruption."

The song is iconic and it belongs to one of the greatest guitarists to ever pick up an axe, and this teenager owns it.

Tina's cover is all but flawless, and it doesn't seem like she cares one bit. Every now and again she'll nonchalantly look away as if she's looking at her teacher and asking, "Is this over yet? I've got stuff to do and tougher songs to play."

The whole video mesmerizes you, and then she starts two-hand tapping. That's when I threw my guitars in the garbage along with my hopes and dreams. Some people are like Tina and have raw talent; other people are me.

Check out the video and watch in awe as Tina plays "Eruption," not because she's a girl or because she's 14, but rather that she's just that good. And while you do that I may try and master the wood block. If only there was an app out there to help hone my skills.

I thought it was cool, but at the same time it looked like she was in pain. :D (People who are enjoying what they are doing is more fun to watch)

That's the thing--she can play that piece that well, and she doesn't even (appear to) care about it!

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
Yeah, first time I saw it I thought she just looked board. She wasn't even thinking about playing it.

Totally agree. I think frieed posted this in the other guitar thread too.

Most of my students are more worried about playing music for showing off rather than enjoying the musical part. Maybe she really loves van Helen and she just doesn't show it. Lots of skill there, but I'm more impressed by people who live to play , not who can play the most technical piece. When I'm playing my guitar around others, most of my requests are for technical stuff, just to see if I can play it or not. I usually can't, but I focus more on songs I like rather than songs that will impress others. That being said, it would take me a long time to learn to play eruption as well as this girl.

Imagine how many times you would have to play that piece to get that good at it, she probably started out loving it, and worked her way into being tired of it.
