help me brainstorm what to get for my next vehicle

So the tacoma sells this week and I'm still undecided. I like the monteros, and if I can find a low mileage one for a good price, I'll probably go that route.

But part of me knows a truck will suit my needs better. I'm thinking a 4 door chevy or gmc 1500 would fit the bill. Anyone know how long the bed is on the short beds?

I believe the short beds are 6 1/2 feet or 5 1/2. I think on the 4 door either is an option, I believe the extended cabs are 6 1/2 or 8

For what you want I don't think you can go wrong with the pickup, I think if you go the SUV route again you will be missing that bed. I'm glad I can have both my 4 runner and my truck between the two of them I can cover all the terrain I desire to run. I really love my truck with the 6 1/2 foot bed for the general camping trips, so much room for gear, I have a "solid" roll up cover that seals up nice keeps all the dirt off the gear, and the bed is big enough I can still fit it all in there with plenty of wood and have the cover closed. Best part is its still has the power and towing capacity to pull the 4runner down to Moab when I want to go do more than some dirt roads.

k, thanks. 6 1/2 is plenty long. I wonder if the chevies and similar full-size trucks handle bumpy roads at speed ok, or if they're more meant for the street.

I took both my 4 door and current extended cab out to freeze your tail off the last two years and both took those roads with zero issues, even trying to keep up with DAA :greg:

I've taken the extended cab on Long Canyon, and potash road with no issue. One of the reasons I don't see myself getting rid of this one, nothing I can think of to replace it with. I love how it rides, I love how the motor sounds, I love all the room and the nice creature comforts

Edit, if you want we can cruise up the backside of AF canyon from midway and you can see how it does on that road been wanting to go for a cruise up there anyway

I'm partial to F*rds so I have to post one :D

All the ones in your price range have a crap load of miles on them, at least the ones I've seen. This ones an FX4 so it should have skid plates and possibly a rear locker. Most I've found have over 100k. If you can find an 09+ the build quality on the interior is better, and I think 09 was the first year they started putting the 6 speed auto's in vs the 5 speed

I went to a bunch of dealers and test drove a few different rigs. I like the yukon/tahoes, but they're a little big. I really like the monteros, but the two I looked at were trashed and the one I wanted to buy had already sold over the weekend. I'm thinking either a 100 series or a 2003 XLS montero are going to be the best. I checked out the gx 470 and I didn't bond with it. So now I'll play the patient game and wait for the right non-leather montero to pop up. Let me know if you see anything like that.

What about a 1st gen tundra? I have to have a full size truck for work, but my 87 yr old grandpa has a 2002 ext cab Limited tundra with only 49k easy miles on it that I lust over on a regular basis. I've driven it a few times and I love everything about it.

What's wrong with leather seats? Wives love heated leather seats in the winter!

What's wrong with leather seats?

Two words: sweaty ass. I already ordered a set of supposedly breathable mesh seat covers to go over the leather in my new-to-me truck, and if they don't cut I'm going to go looking for a cloth bench or set of captains chairs. Leather sucks.

Steve, I just bought an '01 Supercrew. I'm rapidly getting used to the size and I think it's getting better mileage than the '99 4Runner. I can see how camping and roadtripping with this truck is going to be a dream.

Maybe it's because the Montero is white and has tinted windows or that I upgraded the stock A/C condenser fan, but I haven't really experienced the sweaty butt problem you speak of.

Leather seats wear a lot faster and cost a lot to reupholster. I'd take the right limited, but they're selling for $1500-2000 more. The leather and sunroof aren't worth $1500 to me (though I do love the radio and the rear ac). From 2004-2006 all monteros were limited models.

While at the mitsubishi dealership they announced that the montero will be coming back to the states in 2015. That's good news.

John, if your grandpa's Tundra were a true 4 door I would be all over it. While we don't have kids yet, it'd be nice to be able to fit a car seat in back one day. The extended cabs are just too cramped back there.

You won't still have the truck by the time you have kids. Not trying to be funny. Just serious. I love my wife's mini but I would also love something a little bigger. But there is zero reason to do that cause I know we will not have 2 kids within a year. Unless some magic happens on the cruise this weekend. ;)

Probably true, but I never purchase a vehicle with the intention of selling it. That doesn't mean I wont, but if I have the option, I'd rather have something in don't have to sell just because of a kid. Besides, the rear seats suck in those for adults too.
