HELP!!! Openoffice users....

I just got the openoffice program for my new computer. I should be able to open an old word document into openoffice, but it is not letting me. If I open openoffice first and then try to open the old word document, my typing page just stays blank. If I exit out of openoffice and then open the old word document through My Documents, I will see the openoffice start up page come on the screen for just a second and then it closes and nothing happens. If I go back to my documents and hit the properties tag on the word document it tells me it opens with openoffice.

Anyone have any clue as to whats going on and how I can open the document up so I can update it?

I'm pretty sure you have to convert it before opening it.

Yeah, I just figured that out. All my files are Pubs and oo doesn't open them. Once I convert them, they open alright...just not perfect. Oh well.
